Tafida: Family celebrate daughter leaving hospital

PA

The family of a severely disabled five-year-old girl have marked her departure for an
Italian hospital after winning an "emotional" life-support treatment battle.

Supporters of Tafida Raqeeb gathered outside the Royal London Hospital this morning
for a balloon release as the youngster headed to the Gaslini children's hospital in
Genoa.

Tafida's parents won a recent High Court fight with hospital bosses in London, when
a judge ruled that the youngster could be moved to Italy.

Multi-coloured balloons, which read "flying to Italy" and featured a picture of Tafida,
were released in unison.

Tafida's uncle, Abdul Malik, 36, from Whitechapel, said: "It's just amazing to see
everyone here today - you know we've had a long fight from day one."

Kinks' guitarist backs campaign to save arcade

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Ian Dunn

Rock legend Dave Davies has backed a campaign to save a high street shopping
arcade from demolition.

The Kinks guitarist, who grew up in Fortis Green Road, Muswell Hill, called for the
Grand Arcade in High Road, North Finchley to be preserved.

Built in the 1930s in the then-popular Art Deco style, the arcade is home to a range of
small shops, including a jeweller’s and a photo studio.

But it could be torn down to make way for new flats and shops under regeneration
proposals drawn up by Barnet Council.

Mr Davies tweeted his support for the arcade.

He said: “The Grand Arcade is definitely of historical value. We need to preserve

places like this in England and in London. It’s only going to benefit the area in the long
term.”

Mr Davies, who co-founded The Kinks in 1964 with brother Ray, used to buy guitar
strings from a shop in the arcade as a youngster.

More than 1,100 people have signed a petition set up by North Finchley resident Ian
Dunn to save the arcade and have it locally listed by the council.

Barnet Council has been approached for comment.

Unemployment up in London

BBC

Unemployment increased faster in London than in the rest of the UK, according to new
figures.

The unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to an estimated 4.6% in the June-to-August

period, compared to 3.9% nationally.

The Office for National Statistics said employment growth had "cooled noticeably".

But the unemployment rate is still close to its lowest level for 44 years.

Wages continued to outpace the rate of inflation, with earnings excluding bonuses
growing at an annual pace of 3.8%.

Johnson 'pressure' over failed Garden Bridge criticised

Heatherwick Studio

Boris Johnson applied "significant pressure” to push through the failed £53m project
to build a Garden Bridge over the river Thames when he was mayor of London,
according to a new report.

The Prime Minister continued to push his “pet project” in the face of financial problems,
and ultimately contributed to its failure, according to the London Assembly's Garden
Bridge Working Group .

Transport for London “downplayed” the projects risks to satisfy Mr Johnson, according
to the cross-party report.

The Garden Bridge Trust, the charity created to drive the project, "recklessly" signed a
construction contract before securing the necessary land - a decision that cost £21m -
the report found.

The key bodies in the project all "passed the buck" on responsibility for the projects
failure.

Tom Copley, chairman of the London Assembly’s Garden Bridge Working Group, said
the bridge was “an appalling waste of public money”.

He said: “Across all key decision-making organisations, there were consistent failures
to adequately, effectively and transparently deal with the escalating risks of the
project."

Paul Scully, deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party, said: “Sadiq Khan’s flip
flopping on this scheme led to its demise – leaving Londoners paying the price."

“Labour should stop playing politics and start focusing on making London’s streets
safer.”

Is film studio plan in crisis?

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Be First

A Los Angeles-based developer has put its plans to build London’s largest Hollywood-
style film studios “on hold” over the “uncertainty surrounding Brexit”.

Barking and Dagenham was announced as “the next global destination for making
blockbuster movies” when the council and City Hall unveiled proposals for a £110
million studio development in 2017.

It was hoped the 12 sound stages, training facilities, amusement attractions, shops and
restaurants earmarked for the 22-acre site — a former factory opposite Dagenham
East station — would be under construction this year.

Pacifica Ventures, which owns the studio behind Breaking Bad was chosen as the
preferred bidder for the Made in Dagenham studios in early 2018.

But according to the council it has failed to “progress matters sufficiently” and has now
lost its preferred bidder status.

https://www.bbc.com/news/localnews/2643743-london/0 15/10/2019
London News - BBC News Page 10 of 35

In a statement Pacifica Ventures said: “I can assure you that Pacifica Ventures remains
very much committed to the Dagenham Studios project, but unfortunately we and our
investors have been forced to put the project on hold until the Brexit uncertainty has
been resolved.

"We have definitely not dropped out but we understand that the council wants to move
forward more quickly and they have our blessing if a third-party should offer an
alternative proposal that is acceptable to them. We hope that won’t be the case and
that we’ll be able to re-start the project very soon.”

The council said it would still be progressing with the studio plans and will look for
other investors but could also complete the project without outside investment.

Tonight councillors are expected to agree to spend up to £3.4 million to cover any pre-
development costs.

Hospital wards closed after subsidence

Hillingdon Hospital has closed two children’s wards and a paediatric facility after advice
from structural engineers over subsidence in the building.

https://www.bbc.com/news/localnews/2643743-london/0 15/10/2019
London News - BBC News Page 11 of 35

Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Sarah Tedford said the
move was a precaution.

She said: “This is an unfortunate legacy of our ageing estate, which is why we have
worked hard to try to secure the funding not only for a new hospital but for interim
repairs and maintenance.”

The closures saw children on the in-patient Peter Pan ward, out-patient Tinkerbell
ward, and those in the Wendy paediatric facilities at Hillingdon Hospital moved.

A trust statement stated: “The new Executive Team at the Trust has been working with
experts to understand the various significant issues affecting its estate both at
Hillingdon and Mount Vernon hospitals.

“This area of the hospital has been monitored closely for some time, and subsidence
has been a recognised issue. “Now, the most recent expert advice has resulted in this
action, for the safety of the youngest patients.”

The Trust said parents and carers have been informed of the measures and the
reasons behind them.

“Trust staff will start to relocate in-patients to the main hospital soon, and outpatient
clinics will be held elsewhere at Hillingdon Hospital, with other measures put in place
as required.”

Youth workers deployed in hospitals to combat violence

A £4m investment will embed youth workers in hospitals to combat violence, Mayor of
London Sadiq Khan has announced.

Youth workers will be based in five A&E wards, in areas with high levels of victims of
violent crime:

• Newham General Hospital in Plaistow

• The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich

https://www.bbc.com/news/localnews/2643743-london/0 15/10/2019

• Croydon University Hospital

• University Hospital Lewisham

• Whittington Hospital, covering Islington and Haringey

Placing the workers in the A&E departments allows them to intervene and engage with
young people quicker, the mayor's office said.

Director of London’s Violence Reduction Unit, Lib Peck, said: “Young people tell me
that the youth workers are often a significant relationship in their lives and that it’s the
point that they are introduced to new opportunities and diverted away from crime."

The funding announcement follows a stabbing incident in a butcher's shop in

Climate Activists have closed Bank Junction, forcing 17 bus routes on to diverted
routes.

Hundreds of Extinction Rebellion activists set up camp in the junction to "block routes
that financial district workers take to work".

Since 21 May 2017 only buses and cyclists have been allowed to use Bank
junction on weekdays from 07:00 to 19:00.

In a statement the group said the action was to "highlight the far greater disruption
faced by those living in the environments systematically being destroyed by UK backed
companies".

City of London Police said a "policing plan" is in place "which will be proactive in
ensuring any impact on our communities is minimised as much as possible".

Project to transform basketball courts into works of art

In-The-Paint

Several unloved public basketball courts in London and the South East will be turned

In-The-Paint is a communal public art and sport project led by designer Gareth
Roberts, which has been started to promote the need for greater investment in grass
roots basketball within the UK.

The project was crowdfunded online with six volunteers using about 100 litres of non-
