For Long-term Health
From wheelchair basketball to volleyball, from children’s archery to a 92-year-old track & field
participant, the Iowa Games and our affiliated events have provided sports, recreation, health and
wellness opportunities to Iowans of all abilities—for over 30 years.

Our most well-known brand is the Iowa Games, but it is the 33-member board of the Iowa Sports
Foundation that powers the programs, events and challenges that attract thousands of participants
every year.

Who we are...
Iowa Sports Foundation
The Iowa Games, a statewide Olympic-style competition, is the most well-known of the
Iowa Sports Foundation events. The Iowa Games started as a one-weekend effort in
1987 and now has grown to more than 50 sports and events, hosting participants from all
corners of the state.

Live Healthy Iowa (LHI) began in 2002 as a friendly competition encouraging Iowans to
“Lighten Up” and adopt healthier lifestyles. Since its creation, LHI has provided healthy
challenges and events to individuals, families, schools, businesses and communities
across the state.

• Over 28 million minutes of activity reported
• Over 400 schools and youth organizations participated
• 35 communities hosted Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Championships qualifying meets

The Iowa Sports Foundation is in its ninth year of building the Adaptive Sports Iowa (ASI)
program. ASI’s mission is to provide statewide leadership in the planning, promotion,
education and organization of sports and recreational activities for Iowans with physical
and vision disabilities.
• 81 volunteers, cyclists and staff participated on the ASI Cycling Team presented by
Iowa Farm Bureau on RAGBRAI®
• 48 athletes with disabilities participated in the Winter Ski Experience
• Weekly wheelchair basketball program
• The 2019 Adaptive Sports Iowa Golf Classic played host to 29 teams

The Iowa Senior Games, developed to promote life-long health and wellness, offers
several Olympic-style competitions for Iowans age 50 and over.
• Over 1,800 medals awarded in nearly 100 events
• Iowa is a qualifying event for the National Senior Games
• More than 1,300 athletes participated in 2019
• Events are offered in Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Quad Cities and West Des Moines

The Iowa Sports Foundation (ISF) introduced the Des Moines Corporate Games in 2016.
The Corporate Games is a company-based competition that enables and supports
teamwork, company pride and corporate wellness through healthy competition. 2019
marked the first year of the Corridor Corporate Games held in Iowa City and Cedar
Rapids.

Summer Iowa Games
The Summer Iowa Games took place from May-August, hosting 12,089 athletes with 98 of 99 counties
represented. New sports added to the Summer Iowa Games were the Big Fish Classic and Ninja Warrior. The
main weekend featured the Athlete Jamboree and Opening Ceremony with national entertainers Flight Crew
Jump Rope, and Aplington-Parkersburg Principal and Head Basketball Coach, Aaron Thomas, as the keynote
speaker.

Winter Iowa Games


The 2019 Winter Iowa Games had 4,288 athletes from 81 of Iowa’s 99 counties. The majority of events were held
in Dubuque, Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Fourteen other Iowa communities played host to Winter Iowa Games
competitions including Ackley, Ames, Atlantic, Cedar Falls, Central City, Cresco, Des Moines, DeWitt, Eddyville,
Eldora, Elkhart, Harlan, Peosta and Waterloo.

Iowa Games Net Fest Basketball & Ice Hockey


Iowa Games Net Fest had a combined 996 athletes compete in basketball and ice hockey. The tournaments were
held in November, with basketball in Ames on the campus of Iowa State University, and ice hockey at Wells Fargo
Arena in Des Moines.

ADULT CHALLENGES & EVENTS

10 Week Wellness Challenge


More than 8,900 participants from all 99 counties took the 2019 10 Week Wellness Challenge to start the New
Year off right. The team-based activity and weight loss challenge encouraged participants to get active through
the simple, affordable, and fun competition. Participants received a T-shirt, weekly motivational tips, access to
healthy resources, opportunities to win prizes, discount registration for LHI 5K events and a one-year magazine
subscription.

Strut Your Pup Challenge


Live Healthy Iowa offered a unique opportunity for Iowans to team up with a canine companion and get moving.
Nearly 300 participants and their four-legged friends tracked and reported their minutes walking, running or
actively playing throughout the six-week challenge.

Live Healthy Iowa 5K


The Live Healthy Iowa 5K was held in April at 18 locations across the state. The 6th annual event had 1,199
participants celebrating the end of the 10 Week Wellness Challenge. The 18 locations included: Asbury,
Bondurant, Britt, Carroll, Decorah, Dike, Fairfield, Hiawatha, Ida Grove, Mt. Pleasant, Onawa, Perry, Rathbun
Lake, Sergeant Bluff, Sioux Center, Spencer, Story City and Waukee. The runs benefited local wellness coalitions
and Live Healthy Iowa Kids.

Burst Your Thirst Challenge


Summer is the perfect time to encourage Iowans to stay hydrated and active. In 2019, 6,847 participants
joined Live Healthy Iowa’s Burst Your Thirst Challenge, tracking water consumption and activity minutes over the
six-week challenge period. LHI partnered with the Des Moines Corporate Games and Corridor Corporate Games
to include the Burst Your Thirst Challenge as a healthy event for participating companies.

The Next Step Challenge


Just over 2,000 Iowans took steps to a healthier life through The Next Step Challenge. The six-week friendly
competition encouraged participants to step up their physical activity routine and move more each day.

YOUTH CHALLENGES & EVENTS

Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Championships


In 2019, 35 communities hosted regional meets with over 4,700 kids participating. More than 600 regional
qualifiers competed at the state championship held in Marshalltown.

Fall Fitness Day & Go The Distance May


In October 2018, 130,115 kids participated in Fall Fitness Day (FFD) held in collaboration with the annual
Healthiest State Walk. Throughout May 2019, 25,815 kids participated in Go The Distance May (GTDM). Both
events encourage schools and youth organizations to get kids active and highlight the importance of physical
activity in a healthy lifestyle.

Beep Baseball Adaptive Sports on the Grand Concourse
As a result of hosting the World Series of Beep Baseball in Adaptive Sports Iowa partnered with the Iowa State
2012 and 2016, the Iowa Reapers Beep Baseball Team was Fair to host a unique and fun event on the Grand

Adaptive Sports Iowa is proud to support the Iowa Renegade
Wheelchair Basketball Team. The team practices weekly in Adaptive Sports and Recreation Summit
West Des Moines and participates in a number of regional ASI hosted organizations from all across Iowa to share,

provides the necessary equipment and offers opportunities for

Winter Ski Experience


In collaboration with Adaptive Adventures from Chicago, ASI
offers an annual snow skiing event at Seven Oaks Recreation
near Boone. This three-day event presented opportunities for
both local instructors to learn the adaptive equipment, as well
as physically disabled participants to experience the sport. ASI
served 45 athletes with disabilities at this event, with one day
specifically reserved for veterans.

Iowa Senior Games
More than 800 seniors participated in the multi-sport festival. For over 30 years, the featured statewide
event has successfully been hosted in West Des Moines and surrounding communities.

In 2019, regional events were held in Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities. The goal of the regional
model is to increase awareness and participation among the 50 and over population in Iowa and
surrounding states.

Winter Iowa Senior Games


The third annual Winter Iowa Senior Games, held in February in the Quad Cities, featured 231 athletes
competing in seven sports.

Eastern Iowa Senior Challenge


The fourth annual Eastern Iowa Senior Challenge took place in May in Cedar Rapids. This event
featured eight sports and hosted 250 athletes.

Summer Iowa Senior Games


The 2019 Iowa Senior Games was held primarily in West Des Moines. This event had 843 athletes, in
30 sports and skill contests with nearly 100 events.

Des Moines Corporate Games
The 4th annual Des Moines Corporate Games was held throughout June and July. The event featured
77 companies and 14,639 athletes competing in 25 sports and events. Companies earned points for
participation, placing and volunteering. Corporate Cups were presented to the top three companies
in each division at a special event during the Iowa State Fair. Separate awards were presented to the
winners of the Blood Donation Challenge and Meals from the Heartland Challenge.

Corridor Corporate Games


The first annual Corridor Corporate Games was held throughout May, June and July. The event featured
34 companies and 5,400 athletes competing in 25 sports and events. Companies earned points for
participation, placing and volunteering. Corporate Cups were presented to the top three companies in
each division at a special event during FRYfest. Separate awards were presented to the winners of the
Blood Donation Challenge and Meals from the Heartland Challenge.

Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship
In honor of former ISU basketball player Brian Pearson, who died of brain cancer in 1997, the Iowa Games
began awarding the Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship in 1998. Each year, the Iowa Games awards a $1,000
scholarship to one female and one male who exemplify the spirit of Brian Pearson.

Marty McHone Iowa Games Athlete of the Year


In 2003, the Iowa Games Athlete of the Year award was renamed after Marty McHone who was the 1996 Iowa
Games Female Athlete of the Year, and had competed in the Iowa Games track meet for 16 years. The award is
given annually to two Iowa Games athletes who best exemplify the qualities of outstanding integrity, citizenship
and athletic achievement.

Sean Runyan Adaptive Sports Iowa Athlete of the Year


Named in memory of Sean Runyan, a Central Iowa wheelchair athlete who was the first in the nation to compete in
a sanctioned high school athletic event.

Iowa Games Official of the Year


The Iowa Games relies heavily on its sports officials. In most cases, officials receive minimal reimbursement, but
continue to come back year after year to the Iowa Games because of the tradition.

Iowa Games Volunteer of the Year


This award was designed to reward our volunteers and give them the praise and recognition they deserve
for effortlessly giving their time and talents year after year. For many of our volunteers, it is the feeling of
accomplishment, sharing in others’ success, or just having fun that keeps them returning.

Character Counts! Coach of the Year


The Character Counts! Coach of the Year award, sponsored by The Robert D. and Billie Ray Center and the Iowa
Games, is awarded to a coach who displays great character traits in the school and community. The award is
presented by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) at the girl’s state basketball tournament brunch
and the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA} at the boy’s state basketball tournament.

Iowa Senior Games Hall of Fame


The Iowa Senior Games Hall of Fame was established in 2006 (the 20th anniversary of the Iowa Senior Games) to
recognize and honor outstanding athletic performances by our senior athletes, as well as outstanding contributions
made to the success of the Iowa Senior Games by athletes, board members, and volunteers.

Jim Hallihan Sportsmanship Award


The Iowa Games encourages all Iowans to practice sportsmanship, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility,
fairness, caring and citizenship, while striving to be a champion on and off the field of play. In 2015, the award
was renamed to the Jim Hallihan Sportsmanship Award, in honor of the former Iowa Sports Foundation Executive
Director.

In 2019, over 90 teams received the Jim Hallihan Sportsmanship Award.
