17 00 005 Draining and adding coolant M43TU

Warning!
Danger of scalding! Work on the cooling system should only
be carried out when the engine has cooled down.

Recycling
Catch and dispose of drained coolant.
Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

Note:
Follow instructions for working on cooling system,
refer to 17 00 ...
After topping up the coolant, vent the cooling system and
check for water tightness,
refer to 17 00 039 .

Cars with reinforcement plate:

Remove reinforcement plate.

 Draining coolant:
Release cap (1) on expansion tank.

If necessary, remove assembly underguard at front.

Grip radiator adjusting screw (2) and release drain plug (1) on
radiator at bottom.
Drain, catch and dispose of coolant.

Installation:
Replace drain plug (1).
Observe Tightening Torque,
refer to 17 11 2AZ .

Release drain plug (1) on engine block.

Drain, catch and dispose of coolant.

Installation:
Replace sealing ring.
Observe Tightening Torque,
refer to 11 11 5AZ .

Adding coolant:
Release vent screw (1).
Venting takes place during filling.

 Note:
Before filling, turn on ignition, set heater control to maximum
temperature, set fan to low speed. This opens the heating
valves.
Perform filling operation slowly.
Fill up expansion tank fully and wait until bubble-free coolant
emerges at vent points. Close vent plug.
Use only recommended coolant, refer to BMW Service
Operating Fluids in Main Group 17.
