    Sonata theory and formal functions

    For Tuesday the 12th:

    Reading: Please read the article by James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy, “The Medial
    Caesura and its Role in the Eighteenth‐Century Sonata Exposition.” As you will see, this
    approach to sonata organization is qualitatively different from Caplin’s, so keep that in
    mind as you read this essay.

    Written: To help you keep Caplin’s approach in mind, please analyze the exposition of
    Beethoven’s piano sonata op. 10 no. 1 according to his theory and using his terminology.
    You may write on the scores or make a clear diagram with measure numbers. If you
    encounter any ambiguities or difficult decision points, you may write up a brief description.
    Optional: do the same for the exposition of op. 10 no. 2. Scores are attached to this
    assignment.
