Legislation
Scaffolding higher than 24 meters and building designs not mentioned in this manual should be accounted for with
statistical calculations. Van Thiel United B.V. can provide statistical calculations in consultation.

All components for assembly should be checked for damage. Damaged components may not be used.

Welding beams and stands in Tube-Lock® concept

The benefit of connecting two scaffolding tubes, carried out in Tube-Lock® concept, in the length-wise direction, is
that Tube-Lock® couplings are available in the same step height and upright distance.

Connecting two scaffolding tubes, carried out in Tube-Lock® concept, in the length-wise direction, may be
considered a scaffolding tube of a single piece in the pull direction. When used as upright, the maximum buckling
load should also be taken into account.

Upright loads

Tube-Lock® scaffolding with steps from 2m to 20m high 15 kN

Tube-Lock® scaffolding with steps from 2m to 33m high 26 kN
Tube-Lock® scaffolding with steps from 2,9m to 78m high 37 kN

Instruction for Base plate with thin pin

Since tubelock has a smaller opening, one can only use base plates with a thin pin. When sorting,
remember that the base plates with thick and thin pin should be stored separately. When removing
conventional tube, also remove the base plates with thick pin.
Remember that base plates with thin pin may not be used in combination with conventional tube.

Weld couplings without pin

The weld couplings with pin have become superfluous with the use of tubelock, since the tubelock
coupling has taken its place.

The weld couplings without pin should be used in the following situation:

With assembly / dismantling of hanging scaffolding with hangers exceeding 4 meter, in other words
when the tubelock tube has to be extended. The weld coupling should be applied in order to
prevent distortion or detachment of the tubelock. The weld coupling should therefore be applied
over the tubelock coupling. (see attached instruction weld coupling without pin)

Torque
Torque = 1,4 kNm
Mγ = 0,85 kNm (γ = 1,65)

Pull

F2 = 6 kN
F2γ = 4,1 kN (γ = 1,65)

Instruction for Beam clamp

Remember that the beam clamps should always be applied per pair. The beam clamp is fixed on
the flange of the beam with the turning of the bolt. Remember that if the bolt is missing, or can no
longer be turned, the beam clamp can no longer be used and should be removed through the R-
procedure. Just like when mounting a hanging construction for hanging scaffolding with
conventional tube, the mutual horizontal supports should also be connected to each other, when
using beam clamps, using a rectangular tube frame in the hanging construction.

‘Alternate’ uprights

When using tubelock uprights, it is no longer necessary to alternate uprights, this in contrast with
conventional tubes where the uprights have to be alternated for each section size (see attached
manual tubelock concept)

Prevent cutting of tubelock tube

In order to prevent cutting a tubelock tube, the following items have been added, namely:
a. introduction of half a meter of tubelock tube
b. Introduction of the Beam clamp
c. Several sizes of conventional tube are provided for cutting, if necessary, in the
standard stock on the offshore locations or in the standard containers to be shipped.

Advantages of tubelock summarised.

a. Faster assembly / dismantling of scaffolding

b. No more obstacles (weld couplings) with guardrails - safer
c. Braces may now be submitted to pull force, since a weld coupling is no longer used.
d. From an ARBO perspective there is less weight for the scaffolding, since the maximum
height is 4 meter.
e. 6 meter conventional tubes don’t fit in a container
f. 5 meter conventional tubes do fit in a container, but is not a standard size.
g. Since tubelock extremities are sealed on both sides, there is no possibility for external
parties to leave the used weld electrodes etc. behind in tubes. Firstly this means a safer
treatment of scaffolding equipment, especially with dismantling the scaffolding.
Secondly this means that applying “cubby cabs” is no longer necessary, saving time
and money.
h. By using tubelock, there is no further need to alternate with upright lengths. The tubelock
couplings can be applied on the same level. The above implies a more efficient
procedure.
i. A link cannot be installed on site of the weld coupling. This is however possible when
using tubelock.
