Design of a Pump for Alkali Liquids
Design of any machine, equipment and assembly required some basic tasks which
are most common but are necessary to identify for better design. To design a pump
which is subjected to pump and deliver alkaline liquids, we go through different stages
and Phases. For the initial phase which is covered in this assignment consist on following
steps.

1. Clarify and define the task:

The first stage or step for any design, in this stage designer clear his direction and go
through some sort of questionnaire in his mind to clear the specification of the project.
As we know that in every type of project have its own limits and constraints and also
having some free space where we can easily change the things according to availability
and customer requirements. So we consider all that things to clarify our task. For our
design we should clarify and define following perimeters.

 Discharge of the pump Q (m3/s)

 Flow (Continuous or not)
 Head
 Controlled flow
 Pressure
 Type of Suction
 Power available (AC, DC)
 Backup (Required or Not)
 Space available
 Corrosive resistance material

Above mention perimeters define the specification of the pump.

2. Determine functions and their structure:
To produce the function structure it is necessary to produce a chain between all the
functions starting from the input and end at output. Function structure is use to
represent the functions/operations and sub functions of the structure. Simple function
structure for the pump is as under.

Intake Pump Outlet

The main parts of the pump are shown in the function structure.

Reservoir Valve Pipe pipe Storage

Main functions are divided into their auxiliary function. Following figure shows the
function structure of the alkaline liquid pump.
