What is a RFID ?

Abbreviated as Radio Frequency IDentification,it utilizes

radio waves to capture the information stored on the tag
attached to an object.

Being a part of a group of technologies, Automatic

Identification and Data Capture (AIDC), it aims to identify
and store information about objects with least human
effort. It has three main components

ANTENNA
RFID TAG RFID READER

Structure of a RFID Tag

Required to be powered up by RFID
reader before they can become
Passive
ready to transmit data.

Better than a barcode?

RFID based checkouts are definitely a better option:
★ RFID tags do not require line-of-sight access with the
reader unlike a barcode
★ Faster processing time- no more queues
★ Foolproof security
★ RFID tags are read/write capable whereas barcodes
are only readable
Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, NIT Durgapur

Disadvantages of RFID
★ Unauthorized changes to critical information stored
in tags without user’s knowledge.
★ Extensive storage of personal information leading to
potential risk of attacks.
