5 examples of Social Enterprise in the Philippines

Social enterprise are enterprises that does not only focus on the profit they gain but
also considers the betterment of the society and the environment. They are certain
companies or individual who use natural resources and has considerations and
concerns towards the people, the community, and especially the environment. We have
a lot of these so called social enterprise and social entrepreneurs in the Philippines and
below are the examples of it and the reasons why they are called social enterprises.

1.Bambike

Bambike is a socio-ecological enterprise that hires people in need to build bikes made
from locally-sourced bamboo. Bambike or bamboo bikes are locally and hand made
produced by people in the Philippines that was made from fine and good bamboo that is
as sturdy and strong as the metal ones. This enterprise who is also part of Gawad
Kalinga is one of the best examples of social enterprise as they produce bamboo bikes
using natural resources that are found in the nature itself. It also employs a lot of Filipino
and feeds a lot of mouth. They maybe are also on the profit but more than that is the
care and love they show for the environment and they proved that environment can give
us what we need we just need to be more innovative.

2. ANTHILL Fabric Gallery

ANTHILL is an acronym that stands for Alternative Nest and Trading Hub for Ingenious
Little Livelihood Seekers. This enterprise was founded by social entrepreneur Anya Lim
on 2010. This social enterprise promotes Filipino culture and tradition through high-end
indigenous textiles. Their unique fabrics support sustainable employment in rural
communities. They are called or the enterprise is called social enterprise as it is a
business or enterprise that does not only want to improve abilities and skills of their
employees but also to improve their quality of life. It is also remarkable how the
company was able to use different textiles from different localities in the country to
weave or make all those products that they make.

3. Theo & Philo

Theo and Philo is a company or enterprise producing locally made chocolates usaing
cacao from Davao and sugar from Bacolod, Theo and Philo proudly sources their
ingredients from local farmers, thus positively impacting rural Filipino communities. And
instead of opening a huge factory full of machines, the social enterprise consciously
chooses to hire people to handcraft chocolate bars in a “micro” factory setting. Their
commitment to quality is undeniable, and it is apparent in every bite. They are social
enterprise because of the description above wherein they are not after big profit but they
have a goal to help the community and its people.

4. Bayani Brew

It’s no surprise that Filipinos love iced tea. But this all-Filipino, all-natural tea brewery
sets itself apart from its competitors with its philosophy and practices. Not only does it
employ the mothers of a Bulacan community in order to promote sustainable living, it
also promotes native ingredients such as lemongrass and pandan in order to celebrate
being "crazy in love with our country." Bayani brew is a real hero as it is more on
sustainable development plans plans and has a good practice on helping everyone to
have healthy lifestyle.

5. Loudbasstard

Handmade by a community of artisans in Cebu using local bamboo and rattan,


Loudbasstard produces chic, electricity-free sound amplifiers. Each piece is hand-cut,
hand-sanded, hand-dyed, and hand-packaged—ensuring craftsmanship and quality for
every customer. Additionally, this social enterprise provides instruments for musically
gifted children from indigent communities.
