The most popular type in mechanical workshops is the one equiped with nonius, but, usually, all
kinds are enabled to take external, internal, depth and rebound measurements.

To comprehend the science of the measuring with caliper, we suggest you to read and interact with the

Some caliper models are four-dimensional, this means that it can be used in four di erent ways in
the measurement. See some examples of best practices:

Procedure to take a measurement:

1. open (separate the contact faces) the caliper a little bit more than the object to be read;
2. put the object in the opening;
3. gently close it until there is contact between the faces and the object;
4. be sure to align in paralel, you can do that with a gentle swing movement;
5. do the reading and interpretate the measure;
6. open the caliper and take the object o ;
7. place both in an adequate venue;
8. repeat the operation to con rm the measurement;
Obviously, it is necessary to adapt this procedure to each kind of measurement, for example, it is
possible to move the caliper before the reading in depth or rebound measures, or to internal or
external measuring. The rst step is to open the instrument a little bit less than the hole to be
meausured and the 6th step is to close the instrument before removing it from the hole.

External measurement

Allow the caliper to align with the object that is beeing measured. This is possible by holding them
together without pressing.
