ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
*all the following questions has to be answered.
(a)
(b)
SUSPENSION
1. What is suspension? briefly explain the types of suspension and suggest
suitable system for the following.
I) ATV buggy
II) Formula car
2. What are the suspension parameters that affect vehicle dynamics? list them
and justify any 5 parameters.
3. What are coil-overs? explain briefly its advantages and disadvantages.
OR
What is knuckle? With your imagination draw a rough sketch of knuckle.
4. A vehicle tends to pitch, roll and yaw. What suspension parameter(s) may
be the cause and what changes in suspension parameter(s) can reduce
these effects?
5. What is Motion ratio? Explain the effect of the same on the vehicle
performance.
OR
1 What are the two important types of brakes used in commercial road
vehicles? Distinguish between them.
2 What happens to the center of gravity of the vehicle when brakes are applied?
if there is any change in CG, explain why?
3 A 200 kg vehicle is symmetrically loaded longitudinally and is moving at
60kmph on a horizontal road, it stops in 20 meters. The distance between the
front and rear axle is 1.8m.Assuming it decelerates constantly, and its CG
height is 480mm. find the percentage load on the front axle while braking?
4 What is mechanical advantage? What term used in braking means ‘mechanical
advantage’?
5 Mention different types of brake fluids and distinguish between them.
3. What are the different traction motors available? Explain working of any one.
Draw speed-torque characteristics of different DC motors.
4. What are the different power converters available? Explain working of
voltage buck convertor.
6. Explain speed density algorithm to calculate mass airflow for fuel calculation.
(or)
1. Select and justify suitable materials and their thickness for a student
fabricated roll cage of vehicle along the methods which can be used to
weld it.
5. Explain jig and fixture with examples (self drawn sketches expected).
ANALYSIS
1. What are the causes of material failure? Explain the different types of
material failure with example.
2. What is roll cage? What material are roll cage made from? Which cross
section do you prefer? Justify.
3. Differentiate ductile and brittle material based on stress strain curve. Explain
it with suitable diagram.
4. Explain the following terms-
Resilience
Embrittlement
Homogeneity
Stiffness
Damping
STEERING
1. Write a brief note on the different steering geometries. And explain their
differences.
2. Explain about the important steering parameters involved in the steering
design of a vehicle. And also explain how each of them affects the steering
performance of the vehicle.
3. What is understeer and oversteer characteristics? Write a brief note
explaining on which factors they are dependent upon.
4. Write a brief note on the following with methods/measures to reduce the
same
Bump steer
Steering effort
5. Design a steering system for an ATV for the following specifications.
Wheelbase: 50”
Track width: 46”
MANAGEMENT
MEDIA
1. Choose a vehicle of your like and produce photos and videos demonstrating
the features of the vehicle.
2. Design a poster for the event.
