Activity 1 - Identified Problems

Specific Community: Barangay San Carlos, Lipa City

The group's chosen community is Brgy. San Carlos, a barangay located in Lipa City.
Various problems were distinguished by each member and three issues were identified by the
group which have great effects on the community, especially to its residents.

Problems:

1. Dengue Outbreak
A fast emerging pandemic-prone viral disease in many parts of the world,
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing a severe flu-like illness and a leading
cause of hospitalization and death among children and adults. The main vectors are
Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus which transmit the virus and once infected,
humans become the main carriers and multipliers of the virus, serve as the source of the
virus for uninfected mosquitoes.

2. Improper Waste Management

Improper waste management is an issue that is defined as the inappropriate
disposal of garbage such as the failure of waste segregation and recycling, littering, and
dumping hazardous waste indecently to name a few. This results in the different
negative implications for the environment which include soil, air, and water
contamination together with adverse health-related problems.
3. Inefficient Drainage Systems
Inefficient drainage systems remain a stagnant problem within the world
specifically to third world countries such as the Philippines. It is caused mainly by poor
urban planning in the specific community that results in higher frequencies of flash
flooding in an area during rainy seasons causing the destruction of crops, damage to
properties, loss of livestock and many more. It could also result in various
environmental-borne diseases especially in a community where typhoons often occur.

Activity 2 - Eco Map

The group thought of a prevention plan instead of a solution, since the solution of the
given problem requires great resources and manpower. Instead of addressing the issue, the
ideas that came up from each member were to produce a product that will lessen the dengue
outbreak within the community. The stakeholders would provide all the assistance and support
to the chosen proposal.

In the figure above, it shows all individuals that will be involved in the specified project.
First is the school department, the group members/students are the ones who are responsible
for planning and implementing the said program, in which teachers will be the one who will
assist and examine if the group’s plans are feasible, valuable, and solvable to the issues in the
community. Furthermore, experts are required in this arrangement since they are the only ones
that has the capability to know if their product is ready to be used in the locality. In extent, the
townspeople which is the parents and the street cleaners has the right to evaluate, test and give
feedback to the chosen proposal of the group. Lastly, the barangay members will be the ones
who can provide much-needed assistance and support for the successful implementation of the
group’s idea.

Activity 3 - Product Conceptualization

The first product which is the citronella candle, enables each resident to have an added
preventive measure to the current Dengue epidemic happening nationwide. This is made
possible through the ingredient present in the candle which is citronella oil that keeps
mosquitoes away from a certain area to where it is lit. With this, residents would have an
efficient way of preventing the disease. The group also thought of a machine in which it would
be able to release a chemical that could kill dengue mosquitoes to prevent further outbreak of
the disease within the barangay. For the issue of improper waste disposal, the group thought of
a garbage can that could separate biodegradable from non-biodegradable trash through the use
of sensors. Lastly for the inefficient drainage systems, the group came up with a machine that
will be installed in the drainage systems that can segregate garbage from the rainwater. This will
prevent flooding from happening in the community and will help residents prevent diseases like
leptospirosis that can be caught from flood water.
