The Enchantment of Tuna as a Drive for Indonesia's Fisheries

Business The tuna fishing business is very tempting. Tuna which is a type of high
migratory fish is excellent to foreign countries. The high demand of tuna in the world (tends
to overcapacity) makes the tuna industry more passionate from year to year. Another factor is
that tuna products that are liked by all circles make the selling price soar. Indonesia is very
worthy of being taken into account in the tuna business. FAO official data through SOFIA in
2016 there were 7.7 million metric tons of tuna and species such as tuna were captured
throughout the world. In the same year Indonesia succeeded in supplying more than 16% of
total world production with the average production of Indonesian tuna, skipjack and tuna
reaching more than 1.2 million tons / year. While Indonesia's tuna export volume reached
198,131 tons with a value of 659.99 million USD in 2017.

Tuna also contains vitamins A, D, B6, B12, minerals, protein and also rich in omega 3
higher than chicken and beef which helps maintain cholesterol and the heart. The economic
value of Indonesia's tuna fishery product trade is very large and becomes an opportunity that
can continue to be utilized.

The national tuna management plan aims to realize sustainable tuna fisheries
management for fisheries community welfare. Besides that, it also supports the realization of
national food sovereignty, sustainable supply of fish protein and increased income of
fishermen and the provision of employment opportunities on fishing vessels and fish
processing units including other supporting industries which are the national aspirations of
the Indonesian government as a global maritime axis and sea front of the nation.Strategic
policies and programs have been launched by the CTF to achieve sustainable tuna fisheries
management that will benefit and improve the economy of the tuna fisheries community.

While in the third Bali Tuna international conference which took place this year, a
document was launched which contained a strategic framework for the use of tuna fish, called
the Harvest Strategy Framework. This document contains the management of tuna fisheries
that are sustainable types of bigeye tuna, yellow fin tuna, and tuna skipjack.

The government continues to encourage entrepreneurs that tuna fishing must pay
attention to sustainability for the sustainability of tuna resources, traceability to prevent IUU
fishing, and accountability where tuna utilization must be in accordance with the principles of
responsible fisheries management.
