Abstract
Recent earthquakes in the Indian subcontinent have led to an increase in the seismic zoning
factor over many parts of the country. Also ductility has become an issue for all those buildings
that were designed and detailed using earlier versions of codes under such circumstances
seismic qualification of existing buildings has become extremely important. Seismic
qualification eventually leads to retrofitting of the deficient structures. Pushover analysis and
evaluation of performance of building using capacity. Spectrum approach or displacement
coefficient method are increasingly used for this purpose. There for incorporation in the Indian
codes before uniformity of approach can be achieved. This in turn needs an in depth
understanding on what has gone into ATC-40 or FEMA 2000 and making appropriate
notifications to suit the Indian conditions. It is necessary that the debate on is started and
completed early to achieve the desired results. Pre-disaster strategies lead to retrofitting of the
reinforced concrete structures for ensuring satisfactory performance during earthquake.
Repairs can lead to increased stiffness, strength and failure deformation. There is a need to
quantify the performance of the structure
After the repairs have been suggested for such quantification. A large scale experimental
programme undertaken at SERC has shown half it has shown that if there are inherent weakness
in the detailing of the orginal structure. In these cases the performance factor may be depend upon
the state of deformation. Considered for evaluation may not be unique. There is need to address
this issue. Seismic retrofitting of buildings are vulnerable to earthquake. Most of the Indian building
stock is vulnerable to earthquakes to seismic action even if located in areas that have long been
considered of high seismic hazard. In the past thirty years moderate to severe earthquakes have
occurred in India at intervals of 5 to 10 years. Such events clearly show the vulnerability of the
building stock in particular and of the built environment in general. Aim is to focus on a few

specific procedures which may improve the state of the art practice for the evaluation of seismic
vulnerability of existing reinforced concrete buildings and for their seismic retrofitting by means of
innovate techniques such as base isolation and energy dissipation. The seismicity, seismism activity
of an area refers to the frequency, type over a period of time. An earthquake is the result of a sudden
release of energy over a period of time. It is defined as the result of energy in the earth‘s crust that
creates seismic waves. Seismic retrofitting of buildings include the strengthening of the existing
structures weak connections , shear walls connections ties and roof diaphragm.
