Answer the Following:

Q1. Using the principle of Virtual work determine the acceleration of mass 𝑸 in figure
𝑸𝟏. 𝑷 and 𝑸 are masses in 𝑲𝒈, 𝑹 is radius of pulley in 𝒎 and 𝑰 is Mass moment of
inertia of the pulley in 𝑲𝒈 − 𝒎𝟐 . Neglect friction. Also verify the solution by Newton’s
method. 6M

Q2. A mass of 𝟏 Kg is supported by a spring of rate 𝟐𝟎 𝑵/𝑪𝒎 and damper that produces
a force of 𝟐. 𝟓 𝑵 under a velocity of 𝟓 𝑪𝒎/𝒔 of mass. Determine the damping factor 𝑫,
logarithmic decrement 𝜹 and time 𝝉 taken for 𝟑 cycles. What is the amplitude 𝑿𝟔 after
𝟔 cycles if initial amplitude is 𝑿𝟎 = 𝟒. 𝟐 𝑪𝒎? 4M

Q3. For the system shown in figure 𝑸𝟑 what are the generalised coordinates and
generalised forces vectors? Explain. Using Lagrange’s equation, determine the
𝝏𝒓 𝝏𝒓
generalised force vector. Also use 𝑸𝒊 = 𝑭𝟏 𝝏𝒒𝟏 + 𝑭𝟐 𝝏𝒒𝟐 to determine the generalised
𝒊 𝒊

force vector. What is the kinetic energy of the system? Hence using the Lagrange’s
equation, determine the differential equation of motion. Verify the solution using
D’Alembert’s equation. 7M

Q4. An unknown mass of 𝒎 𝑲𝒈 is attached to the end of a spring of unknown stiffness

𝑲 𝑵/𝒎. Natural frequency of the system is 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝒄𝒑𝒎 and when 𝟎. 𝟓 𝑲𝒈 is added to the
mass 𝒎, natural frequency of the system is 𝟕𝟓 𝒄𝒑𝒎. Determine the values of mass 𝒎
and stiffness 𝒌. 3M
