Sciences. June 2019. “Realia as a Learning Strategy on the performance in English of
Grade 7 Students”

ABSTRACT

This study sought to scrutinize the utilization of Realia as a learning strategy or as an aid in
teaching Grade (7) seven students, that is very useful to both the students and the teachers to
be able to do their individual task more effective and easy and it had been focused specifically
to student’s vocabulary, if this strategy enhances the student’s vocabulary. It was conducted at
Molugan National High School, Molugan, El Salvador City Misamis Oriental situated along the
national highway. It was conducted inside three consecutive weeks within the month of
September to a group of one hundred respondents that is equivalent to two school rooms. The
respondents were all grade seven students and it had been indiscriminately chosen that fifty of
them were treated by the realia strategy and the other fifty students were tutored by the lecture
method. During this study the realia that were used were taken from the three stories that were
mentioned in titled ‘’The Mats’ by Francisco Arcellana’, ‘’Centepide’’ by Roni V. Diaz and ‘’How
my brother Leon brought home a wife’’ by Manuel Arguilla. All the words that are created with
realia are solely those tangible or concreate nouns. The questionnaires that were used are
solely made by the researcher and have done a pilot testing while the realia that were used
were also validated and it was used throughout the study. It had been discovered within the
study that the used of realia as a learning strategy offers a large impact towards the student’s
vocabulary for it helps the students to grasp more clearly the lesson. The study found out that
the Realia as a Learning Strategy is more effective than the lecture method as the students
scores have proven its significant effect to the students learning. The study revealed that using
Realia as a Learning Strategy the students got a mean score of 26.49 while the students in
purely Lecture method in contrary got 15.14 mean score. 94% of the students treated with
Realia as a Learning Strategy got scores that is above 24 which is outstanding while only 28%
of the students under lecture method got scores that range from 18-20 which is just satisfactory.
In this, Realia as a learning strategy proves to increase the posttest scores which gives an
outstanding effect to the student’s learning.
