EDU 220 May 12, 2019 Cooperative Instruction Lesson Plan I. Describe the Class There are 28 students in the classroom, there is one learning disabled, and two gifted students. 9th grade. II. Subject Skill Science: The students will research specific scientists from the past or present and discuss what information they learned from them as well as chose one of the experiments III. Objective(s) 1. The students will be able to find information about the scientist, they will research important information about their life, theories and experiments. They will then choose an experiment from the scientist they researched. They will then get the materials in class to practice the experiment and present it to their group. 2. Students will be able to find information about the scientist, they will gather important information from the scientist. They will chose an experiment and put together how they would do the experiment. 3. The students will be able to find information about the scientist, they will write down a summary of the person they researched and present it to their group about what they learned. IIII. Procedures 1. To introduce students to this lesson plan. The teacher will have a picture of Isaac Newton on the projector. Then the teacher will drop something as a pencil or book and ask the students what type of concept they have just seen. 2. From there the teacher will explain to the students that they will be split up into groups. Give the students a list of different scientists. 3. In the group each student will choose a different scientist. They will get a whole class period to do the research that is necessary. The gifted student will have to work with one of the students, they will choose the same scientist and work together in the group. 4. The teacher will then make sure the students are conducting the research correctly. 5. After they have done their research for the next period they will have to choose one of the experiments that scientist did and create a list of supplies they will need. 6. For the third class students will be able to practice their experiment before having to present it to their group. They will also have to write down what is it that they learned from their experiment. 7. On day 4 students will be able to get back to their group and prepare to present their experiments to their group and the information they learned. V. Materials ● The list of materials that are requested from the students ● Paper ● Rulers ● Pencils and Pens ● Goggles ● Aprons, and hair nests ● Clean hydroflasks, containers, plastic bags and markers V. Grouping Structures For this lesson plan the teacher will split students into three. For the disabled students the teacher will have to be more involved with them to make sure they can gain some information from the scientist that they choose. As for the talented students they will have to pair with another student in their group and they will both do the research together on the same scientist. The teacher will have to be involved with the groups that have the talented, and disabled students to make sure it is going smooth. VI. Modifications The accommodations I would have to do is that the disabled student and gifted would maybe have to do the research but instead do a shorter report and for the experiment they would have to do a drawing of what is it that they see it happened in the experiment. Maybe what I would do is have them coordinate the presentations between the groups. Since there will be a lot of small groups the class would have some prepare their experiment ins some groups while other groups present to each other. VII. Assessment The assessment would be used when the students are presenting to each other. Each student in the group will have to write down what they learned in a separate page for each student. They will take notes about the presentation and that will also be the ticket out the door.
I will be using the strategy of jigsaw in which the students do their own work than return to their group to teach their peers what they learned.
