Lane Construction Corporation:
the merger with Salini Impregilo
Salini Impregilo strengthened its presence in the United States in 2016,
merging with The Lane Construction Corporation, one of the country’s
leading heavy civil construction companies.
Based in Cheshire, Connecticut, Lane is a top U.S. highway contractor. For
the past five years, it has consistently ranked in the top 50 of the 'Top 400
Contractors' list published annually by Engineering News-Record (ENR).

Founded in 1890, Lane is a specialist in highways, bridges, mass transit

routes and airport runways. It helped make the U.S. Interstate Highway
System a reality by building some of the nation’s most well-known superhi-
ghways, contributing to the development of the U.S. economy.
Lane’s projects have come to include runways for airports like Dulles Interna-
tional Airport in Washington, D.C., and race tracks for sports cars, before
going abroad to open activities in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, where
it did a runway for the Sharjah International Airport.

With nearly 5,000 employees, Lane operates in more than 20 states and
has operations along the East Coast and in Texas.

Lane is a leader in public-private partnerships (P3), an expertise it has deve-

loped over the past decade.

It has also become the largest private producer of asphalt in the United
States.

recognized by the specialist publication,
Engineering News-Record (ENR).
Acting as a client’s strategic partner at the
inception of every project, the Group helps with
the adoption and development of renewable
energy production in a multitude of countries.
During the course of the years, it has built 257
dams and hydroelectric plants on five continents,
resulting in a combined installed capacity of more
than 37,500 MW of clean, cheap energy.
Salini Impregilo is also specialized in
underground works for the collection, storage
and treatment of waste and rain water, thereby
saving this precious resource and reducing the
amount of pollution that often contaminates rivers
during times of flooding.

The construction of large-scale dams and hydroelectric plants has

always been a feature of Salini Impregilo’s work across continents, accoun-
ting for 50% of all hydroelectric energy produced in some countries.

Sector leader

Salini Impregilo’s experience in building such plants has earned it a wealth

of unrivalled experience.
Its competencies allow the Group to overcome a project’s technical and
geological challenges, as well as deal effectively with social, political,
environmental and financial issues that can arise. In many cases, its
solutions set precedents, such as the Lake Mead Intake 3 that guarantees
the supply of water to Las Vegas.
It develops technologies to meet the requirements of each project, including
plants for the distribution and pouring of concrete. They include tower
cranes and cable cranes with oscillating or radial-movement towers on
horizontal or inclined pathways to conveyor belts.
The need to respect highly demanding deadlines has led Salini Impregilo to
develop the ability to plan and manage large-scale facilities for the
production of aggregates and concrete. The characteristics of the geolo-
gical structures and the environmental conditions have often required the
installation of cooling and/or heating systems to control the temperatures of
the concrete during the placing and curing phases.

Motorways and Roads

The Group’s work ranges from roads in Africa’s rural interior to

motorways in industrialised Europe and megacities areas, contributing
to finding the proper solution to the chronic congestion faced by big cities.
It often faces the challenge to build new roads in high density population
areas, safeguarding the normal services during the construction period,
thanks to the ability to apply the more innovative construction techniques.

Bridges and Viaducts

It builds all types of bridges and viaducts, using every technology at its
disposal: from girder decks and pre-cast or cast-in-place concrete
caissons to more complex structures such as cable-stayed and suspended
bridges. The tunnels it excavates include everything that make them safe,
such as lighting, ventilation and fire-prevention systems.
The Group’s capabilities have been enhanced by the 2016 merger with

A Quality-Focused
Group
Our pursuit of excellence and continuous improvement represents for
us the main incentive of growth and competitiveness, maintaining a
keen and continuous focus on quality, environment, health and safety.

Inspired by the principles of sustainable development, Salini Impregilo

has developed a set of QHSE Policies to drive the organization
towards achieving our vision.
To accomplish its mission, Salini Impregilo has developed a QHSE
Management System for the entire scope of the Group’s activities,
from the design stage and management of works to the implementa-
tion and subsequent running of construction activities.
Our certified Management System consists of ISO 9001, BS OHSAS
18001 and ISO 14001.

Quality
UNI EN ISO 9001 standard

(Certification of Quality Management Systems)

Safety
BS OHSAS 18001 standard

(Certification of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems)

Environment

(Certification of Environmental Management System)

Policies and related QHSE Management Systems are designed

to enhance our human and professional resources in using
technological and organizational innovation and developing
construction solutions.
Policies and systems express our commitment in meeting client
expectations and operating in accordance with environmental, ethical
and professional principles in compliance with the highest internatio-
nal criteria for corporate governance. We focus on the centrality of
human life and the protection of the individual, reducing the environ-
mental impact.

43
Our People
We believe in Our People
In an ever more complex and competitive world, human capital is a key
factor in maintaining our leadership: it is the key element of Salini
Impregilo’s success.
In every corner of the world, behind every major infrastructure project, there
lies the hard work and creativity of the Group’s 35,000 people from more
than 100 nationalities. Highly skilled professional men and women, together
sharing a common objective: to build infrastructures that improve the quality
of life of people living in the communities.
We believe in challenging ourselves and improving our skills and
competencies: we believe in our people.
It is through them that we can build value.

New Generation of Builders

We believe that our continual growth is
possible by sharing our legacy with new
generations.
This vision is expressed through a
strategic alliance to create a new
managerial class, nurtured by internal
resources as well as new talents drawn
from the world's best universities, to
manage the company in the future.
The vision took shape in 2014 with the
"Courage at Work" campaign, then, in 2015, with the "Tomorrow's
Builders" programme and, a year later, with the Master’s in International
Construction Management launched with the Politecnico di Milano.

Together with employer branding plans aimed at attracting young people in

co-operation with the best universities worldwide, “Tomorrow’s Builders”
represents a milestone in the company’s recruitment plan. Selected from a
recruitment campaign in 2015, 100 young engineers joined the Group and
were assigned to projects in Italy and abroad to learn to work in the
infrastructure sector.
