How many 5-in.-diameter, 1/4-in.-thick disks can be
fitted into a 4-ft long, 5 1/4-diameter cylindrical
container?
My answer:
Knowing:
 Diameter of disk =5 in, so the radius is 2.5 in
 ¼ in thick of disk
 5/4 in of diameter cylindrical so the radius is 5/8in
 4 ft long of cylindrical
Questioning:
 How many disk that can fit in the cylindrical
Steps
volume cylindrical container
How many disk in the cylindrical =
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑘

Volume cylindrical container = Area X high

1 𝑓𝑡 = 12 𝑖𝑛
4𝑓𝑡 = 4 × 12 𝑖𝑛 = 48𝑖𝑛
𝑉 = 𝜋𝑟 2 × ℎ = 3.14 × (2.625)2 × 48 = 1038.55 𝑖𝑛3
Volume disk = Area X thick
1
𝑉 = 𝜋𝑟 2 × 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑐𝑘 = 𝜋 × (2.5)2 × = 4.9065 𝑖𝑛3
4
volume cylindrical container 1038.55 𝑖𝑛3
How many disk = 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑘
= 4.9065 𝑖𝑛3
= 211.66 = 212 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑘

In the U.S., the fuel consumption of an automobile is
expressed in X miles per gallon. Obtain a single factor
that could be used to convert the X miles per gallon to
km per liter
My answer:
Knowing: the fuel consumption of an automobile is
expressed in X miles per gallon
Questioning: convert X miles per gallon to
km per liter
Steps:
𝑋 𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑒𝑠 … 𝑘𝑚
=
1 𝑔𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑛 … 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟
We know that 1000 liter = 264 gallon, so 1 gallon = 3.788 liter
𝑋 × (1.6093 𝑘𝑚)
= 0.42484 𝑘𝑚/𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟
1 × (3.788 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟)

Calculate the arc length S1 in the accompanying figure.

R2 = 8 cm, R1 = 5 cm, and S2 = 6.28 cm.

My answer:
Knowing:
 S2 = 6.28 cm
 R1 = 5 cm
 R2 = 8 cm

Questioning:
S1 ?
Steps:
We find a formula that stetes:
𝑆1 𝑆2
𝜃= =
𝑅1 𝑅2
𝑆1 6.28 𝑐𝑚
𝜃= =
5 𝑐𝑚 8 𝑐𝑚
6.28
𝑆1 = × 5 = 3.925 𝑐𝑚 = 0.03925 𝑚

Estimate the frontal area (excluding the display
panel) of the cell phone shown in the accompanying
figure.
My answer:
Knowing: approximately 13 cm of length and 8 cm length of the cellphone
Questioning: Estimate the frontal area excluding the display

Steps:
13
 Find the amount of each unit small square = = 0.722 𝑐𝑚/𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡
18
 Using count square = There are 18 unit small square in overall body
cellphone and 90-unit small square of display panel
 Calculate the area of body cellphone
(180 + 2 + 4) (0.722 )= 134.292 𝑐𝑚2
 Calculate the area of display panel
90 × 0.722 = 64.98 𝑐𝑚2
 Total area cellphone without display =
area of body cellphone - area of display panel
134.292 - 64.98 = 69. 304 𝑐𝑚2

Calculate the volume of material used in making 100 ft
of 4-in. type L copper tubing.
My answer:
Knowing:
 nominal size = 4 in
 high = 100 ft, so it same with 1200 in
 Type L copper tubing

Questioning: volume of material that used

Steps:
 We know from the table of dimension of copper tubing ( Type L –for
HVAC application that the 4 in of nominal size has 3.905 in of inner
diameter and 4.125 in of outer diameter. It implies that there is 1.9525 in
of inner radius and 2.0625 in of outer radius
 Volume of material is found by the difference between outer and inner
volume.
 Outer volume =
𝜋𝑟 2 × ℎ = 3.14 × (2.0625)2 × 1200𝑖𝑛 = 16028.72 𝑖𝑛3
 Inner volume =
𝜋𝑟 2 × ℎ = 3.14 × (1.9525)2 × 1200𝑖𝑛 = 14364.58 𝑖𝑛3
 Volume of material that used =
16028.72 𝑖𝑛3 - 14364.58 𝑖𝑛3 = 1664.14 𝑖𝑛3
