INTRODUCTION

Osmosis is very important for living organisms. Living

cells use this process to pull in & expel water through
a semi-permeable membrane based on the
concentration gradient i.e. from a medium of higher
concentration to a medium of lower concentration.
This particular project was done to find out if water
would move from a hypotonic solution and from a
hypertonic solution in and out of an egg respectively.

5
AIM

To demonstrate the process of osmosis by

using egg as an osmometer.

6
THEORY

Osmosis is a special type of diffusion, in which

solvent molecules move from a region of their higher
concentration to the region of lower concentration
through a semi-permeable membrane till a state of
equilibrium is reached.
If a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution (i.e. a
solution having higher concentration of solute and
lower concentration of water) then the water
molecules will move out of the cell, causing it to get
shrink.
If a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution (i.e. a
solution having lower concentration of solute and
higher concentration of water) then the water
molecules will move into the cell, causing it to get
swelled up.

7
MATERIALS REQUIRED

Two eggs, a hypertonic solution of sugar, a

hypotonic solution of salt, a weighing
machine.

8
PROCEDURE
At first two eggs were taken and dissolved in a
vinegar solution separately & left undisturbed for 3
days to remove the outer shell.
Then we have taken two beakers and marked them A
& B.
We have filled beaker A with 300ml of water and
beaker B with 300ml of sugar syrup.
Then we have submerged the eggs in the beakers and
left it undisturbed for a time lapse of about 7-8 hours.
Then we have measured the weight of the eggs and
recorded the values.

[ SWITCHING THE EGGS ]

In the next round, we have switched the eggs and

submerge the swelled up egg in water & the shrunk
egg in sugar solution.
Again, we have left it undisturbed for 7-8 hours.
 Finally, the eggs were taken out from their respective
mediums, their weights were measured and recorded.

10
CONCLUSION

In the first round the egg in beaker A has undergone endosmosis and
its weight got increased whereas in case of the egg in beaker B,
exosmosis took place decreasing the weight of the egg.
When we have switched the eggs with respect to their mediums,
exosmosis took place in the case of the egg which has got an increase
in weight and vice-versa.
