Insects are the dominant group of animals on the earth and their species almost 80% of the total

number of animals on the surface of the earth. Nocturnal insects can see light waves that are
longer than humans and can distinguish different wavelengths of light. The presence of insects
can be influenced by the intensity of the light. Bungkul Park Surabaya is an icon of a city park in
Surabaya which has lights scattered around the park. This study aims to identify the diversity of
nocturnal insects and analyze the effect of the light spectrum on the community structure of
nocturnal insects in Bungkul Park, Surabaya City. This research is a descriptive observation
study using a direct observation method conducted at 5 stations. Observations are held every
Saturday and Sunday at 18.00-20.00 WIB. Identification of nocturnal insects by matching
morphological data in the field with insect identification books and available library resources.
Data were analyzed using the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index (H) and categorized at the level
of diversity according to Odum. The output of this study is a scientific article from the research
on the effect of light on the presence of insects carried out in Bungkul Park, Surabaya, which will
be presented at a national seminar and published in the Biology Research Journal and its
Application (JRBA).
