 WHAT IS AN AUTOMOBILE?
The french origin word means all vehicles that
are self powered.
“AUTO” means “SELF” and refers to something
that can operate on its own.
“MOBILE” means “MOBILITY” or “CAPABLE OF
MOTION”.
Therefore “AUTOMOBILE” means a vehicle
that has the capability to move without
external power assistance.
 HISTORY
The first stationary gasoline engine developed
by german inventor “KARL BENZ” which was
one cylinder two-stroke engine.
On January,29,1886, karl benz applied for a
patent for his vehicle powered by a gas
engine.
Which was a single cylinder four-stroke
engine.
The patent number “37435” may be regarded
as the birth certificate of the automobile.

 TRANSMISSION
 The transmission means passing, sending or
transmitting something to a different person or
place.

 This is a part of the vehicle that connects to the

back of the engine offering power from the
engine to the wheels.

 The transmission uses the power created in the

engine to keep the wheels spinning and keep the
engine with in a certain revolution per minute
range.
 MANUAL TRANSMISSION (MT)
A manual is also known as manual gearbox &
“stick shift”.
This type of transmission uses a driver
operated clutch usually engaged and
disengaged by a foot peddle.
There present a gear selector that can be
operated by hand.
Cars presently using manual transmission are:-

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (AM)
 Automatic transmission is also known as auto or
“self shifting transmission”.
 An automatic transmission is a completely
automated gearbox.
 It can self change gear ratios as the vehicle
moves, freeing the driver from having to shift
gears manually.
 Cars presently using automatic transmission are:-

 DSG
A “Direct Shift Gearbox” also known as “Dual
Clutch Transmission”(DCT).
DSG is an electronically controlled dual clutch,
multiple-shaft gearbox.
It consist of automatic clutch operation and
with full automatic & semi automatic gear
selection.
DSG automates two separate manual
gearboxes(and clutches) contained with in one
housing and working as one unit.

 ADVANTAGES OF DSG
1) Better fuel economy.
2) No loss o torque transmission from the
engine to the driving wheels during gear
shift.
3) Short up-shift time of 8 milliseconds when
shifting to gear.
4) Smooth gear shift operation.
5) Consistent down-shift time of 600
milliseconds regardless of throttle.
 DISADVANTAGES OF DSG
1) Relatively expensive.
2) Heavier then the other ones.
3) Marginally worse overall mechanical
efficiency compared to the conventional
manual transmission, especially on wet
clutches.
