Dear St. George’s School Community:

Our Headmaster, Dr. Tom Matthews, has informed the Board of Directors that he
intends to retire after a long and distinguished career as a professional educator
spanning more than 35 years, the last 10 at St. George’s School. Dr. Matthews has
committed to remain in his position until the Society Board has found a successor,
hopefully by June 2020.

We will be able to celebrate Tom and his extraordinary contribution to the School
at a later date. At the present time, however, I simply want to inform you that the
Society Board has already begun the process of identifying an exceptional
successor and looks to all members of the community for their participation. We
will establish a Head Succession Committee representative of the Board and all
interested communities.

We have engaged Perrett Laver, a leading international search rm, to advise and
support us in this important work. Perrett Laver serves the schools, universities,
and non-pro ts sector globally and has advised many global academic institutions
on the appointment of school Heads and university Presidents. Locally, Perrett
Laver recently supported UBC in their appointment of Professor Santa Ono as
President, as well as Crofton House School and Shawnigan Lake School in the
recent appointment of their new Heads.

Dr. Matthews will continue in his full capacity as Headmaster through to his
departure and will coordinate with the successful candidate to ensure a smooth
and successful transition.
