Brass Tech Rote Song Lesson Plan

Objective:
The students will perform Ode to Joy in small groups on their brass instruments.

Procedures:
1. I will sing the full melody twice, showing where phrases are by making clear breaths at
the end of each phrase
2. I will do call and response with the students, singing a single phrase and then having
them repeat it back to me
3. The students will sing the entire melody to me, demonstrating knowledge of the pitches,
note values, and phrasing
4. I will sing the melody twice again, making clear gestures of the fingerings of each pitch
5. I will do call and response for each phrase again, having students show fingerings as they
sing
6. I will play each pitch for the song individually and have the students play back to me
after each pitch
7. I will listen as students play the entire melody

Assessment:
Assessment will be informal and based on the ability to play three distinct pitches that
follow the proper contour of the melody, the use of accurate fingerings, and performance
of proper note values.
