Title :
Sphero Droid
Abstract :
A robot is a machine especially one programmable by a computer capable of
carrying out a complex series of actions automatically. Robots can be guided by an
external control device or the control may be embedded within. Robots may be
constructed on the lines of human form, but most robots are machines designed to
perform a task with no regard to their aesthetics .
For last two decades constant research is being bone in field of robotics. With new
technologies and increasing demands of us, new types of robots are being created
like quadrupedal robots for carrying baggage or robots to simplify the assembly line
process in factories or robots to act as assistant and help on front desk at hotels and
companies.
One such type of robot is Spherical mobile robot (SMR), which has a ball shaped
outer shell to accommodate all its mechanism, control devices and energy sources in
it. Spherical robot is characterized as simple, compact, well-sealed structure and
agile motion. The spherical structure offers extraordinary motion properties in cases
where turning over or falling down will bring risks during motion. A spherical mobile
robot which has full capability to recover from collisions with obstacles can be used
to survey unstructured hostile industrial environment or explore other planets.

Different drives are available from wind driven spherical robots to Internal Drive Units
(IDU) robots. The wind driven robots generate very less amount of torque for
themselves. This makes it difficult for the robot to overcome obstacles and climb
uphill. Therefore, this project focuses on use of spherical robots on flat surfaces.

Applications:
 Indoor or outdoor navigation
 Security tasks and human development
 Can operate even in the hazardous or dirty environment
 Provides quick mobility
 Has well sealed structure to prevent any harm to circuits and working
components

Advantages:
 Spherical shape of the robot is easy to roll, accurate actuation and control.
 Compact and Encapsulated structure
 Full capability to recover from collisions with obstacles
 Spherical structure can provides motion in tightly constrained spaces
 Due to single point of contact minimal friction for locomotion

Conclusion:
A spherical robot is easy to construct, has a sealed capsule to protect its hardware
and new design to accommodate current needs of the society. Its applications are
from using in hazardous location to using as toys at home or even as space and
planetary exploration devices.
