MATH 227 Introductory Statistics – Fall 2019

Day and Time: Online
Instructor: Prof. John Sikora email: sikorajl@laccd.edu

You will need 3 things for this course:

 A computer
 Internet Access
 Text book and access code for online work.
Computer: You should have a desk top or laptop. Cell phones and tablets tend to
lose their internet connections often. If you lose your internet connection while
taking an exam, the exam will close and you will not be allowed to retake it.
Internet Access: Wi-Fi is not acceptable for this course. You must have a wired
internet connection, because if you lose your connection while taking an exam…
(See above)
Text book and Access Code: You have two options:
Text: Elementary Statistics “Picture the World” Ron Larson / Betsy Farber 7th Edition

1. Purchase the eBook, which comes with the

access code, a variety of multimedia resources
including videos, demonstrations and Statistics
tools, and is far less expensive than the hard
copy.

OR
2. Purchase the hard copy of the text book, which
is available in the bookstore and comes with an
access code.
I. Goal of the course: The primary goal of this course is to familiarize students with the methods
of statistics required to succeed in college level math courses.
II. Course Format:
Classes Begin-End: Aug. 26 – Dec. 9, 2019
LAST DAY TO:

 Drop classes without a grade of “W” Sept. 6, 2019

All homework, quizzes, tests and exams for a given week must be completed during that
week. You cannot go back and complete assignments later in the course.
III. Grading Criteria:
1. Homework: Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. You will get 3 attempts
to earn your highest grade. For homework assignments, time is unlimited.
2. Exams:

We will take exams online, so everyone needs to know how that

process works:
 While taking exams you do only two things: Answer the questions and
then click the black arrow to the right to move to the next question.

 You cannot attempt to open other windows while taking an exam

 You cannot click the forward and back arrows on your browser.

 You cannot close the browser window.

There will be five mid-term exams, followed by the final exam. You get one attempt
at taking the exam, and the time is limited to 100 minutes, so when you attempt to
take an exam, please be sure to make sure your internet connection is functioning and
that you have enough time to finish the exam. Again, I cannot open exams once
you’ve attempted to take the exam.
3. Your Grade: 5 Exams @ 12%; Final Exam 30%; Homework 10%
Grading: 90-100 = A 80-89 = B 70-79 = C 60-69= D 59 and below = F

cumulative frequency distribution.

curve, ogive, stem-and-leaf plots, pie charts, density scale histogram, scatter diagram,
box-and-whicker plot.
