Problem: Health problem in IIT.

This semester, people living in IIT had faced a major health problem. Situation
has turned into an epidemic that most of the people living in the campus were ill
due to some disease or the other. Many students were not able to give their
minor exams, professors were unable to take classes. The major diseases were
viral fever, eye flu, dengue etc. The main reason for this problem is bad health
environment and lack of proper system to handle such situation.

Reasons for this epidemic:

 Open drainage system (London Bridge).
 Water logging in unleveled land at open areas.
 Due to increase in number of students this year, three students are
accommodated in double room, due to which room hygiene is poor.
 Poor maintenance of dustbins.
 Delhi faced highest rainfall this year since last 32 years.

YEAR RAINFALL ( in mm)

2010 949
2009 545
1978 965
 Due to common wealth games, lot of construction work happened in Delhi
which also created a bad health environment.

DATA
SURVEY

A small survey was conducted by us in our hostel in which 100 student were given
a question.

Question – Have you suffered from any of the following disease in this
semester?
 Dengue
 Viral
 Eye flu
 No disease

The results are as follow.

% people

Dengue
Viral
Eye Flu
No disease

IIT hospital Record

Although we didn’t get any data officially from IIT Hospital as there were some
confidentiality issues but we talked to Doctors and other staff about the situation
in the hospital during the peak of this crisis. They told us that IITD Hospital is
accustomed to handle 100 patients a day. But back then, number of patients
coming to the hospital was around 600. This overloaded all the facilities in the
hospital. To get a blood test done a person needed to get an appointment in two
days advance. Also, Doctors were working in extra shift to handle such huge
traffic of patients.
Possible Solution:

Just as IIT Delhi got the security inside the campus privatized, we will hire an
organization which will take care of hygiene in IIT. Jobs which this organization if
going to handle are as follow:

 Full time workers of the organization will clean all the common areas in
hostels, institutional areas and residential area.
 Health check up camp once in a month.
 Maintains the infrastructure to prevent the growth of mosquitoes and
other germs.
 Take proper action like sprinkling etc to prevent epidemic before rainy
season.
 Awareness campaign.
 Maintenance of dustbins.
 Help hospital at the time of epidemic by providing human resource.
 Will conduct survey regarding health from time to time and improves itself.
