DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTIONAL LEARNING PLAN
FOR WORLD LITERATURE

CONTENT STANDARD:
The learner demonstrates understanding on Personal Challenges using the
Inspirational video of Nick Vujicic and the Short Story of Deadalus and Icarus by Nick
Pontikis.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD:
The learner produces better understanding on the reflection of weakest and lowest of
his/her life and produces an essay to address challenges on bullying.

I.OBJECTIVES:
1. Analyze the personal challenges using inspirational video and short story.
2. Relate with the significant human experience embedded in the video and text.
3. Demonstrate understanding of personal challenges using an essay.

II.LEARNING TASK:
A. Understanding Personal Challenges of Nick Vujicic and Deadalus.
B. References: World Literature Modules, pages 35-39
C. Text: Deadalus and Icarus by Nick Pontikis

III.PROCEDURES:

ACTIVITY
A. Activate Prior Knowledge
Form smaller groups. Each group should do the following activity:
a. Discuss the time when you were belittled, lost, deprived, weak and low in life.
b. Using meta-cards, list down your experiences in life. Write one feature for each meta-
card.
c. You are given 3 minutes to finish the activity.
d. After the allotted time, post your output in the designated area for viewing of all the
participants.
e. Participants view the output. Each group is given another 3 minutes for a gallery walk.
Direct the participants to group the common features of the experiences by posting the
meta-cards. The output may look like this:

3. How are you able to reflect on the activity to address your weaknesses and lowest
feelings?

B. Hook-Up
Determine what students already know about the topic that is going to be studied.
This will help to create interesting reading. Activating poor knowledge allows students to feel
that they are somehow connected to the topic being studied. Helping to create a more
positive learning environment and helping students feel that they are part of the learning
process.

Let the participants return to their seats. Watch the video carefully and answer the
questions to be asked by your teacher.

ABSTRACTION
A. Here are four inspiring life’s lessons all of us can learn from Nick Vujicic’s Life Story.

1. Faith In Action Transforms Your Life.


Nick Vujicic says his parents are Serbian. He was born and raised in Australia and
now lives in United States; but, he’s a citizen of Heaven. Nick said, “I’m not jealous of
anyone having arms or legs because I’ve got something much more, which is faith in Jesus

Christ … He will carry me when I cannot walk.” This sounds unfathomable for many of us,
but Nick’s confidence comes from knowing his ‘why’ in life – rooted in his identity in Christ.
Everything he does is an outgrowth of his mission which is to be the best witness of God’s
Love and Hope. His faith in action has been an imperishable fuel that ignited his new
vocation as an ambassador of Christ.

2. Don’t let circumstances prevent you from living intentionally.


The life of Nick Vujicic calls us to steward our lives – that is, to live intentionally.
Imagine the sheer harassment and torment he had to weather through living his life. Nick
refused to let physical limitations hold him back. Nick says he has discovered the power to
take control of his life. Today, he snorkels, golfs, surfs. He has traveled over 44 countries
with his message of hope.

Theologian William Barclay said, “The greatest two days in anyone’s life [are] the day
you were born and the day you knew why,” Many may feel the former has been a curse to
Nick, but in fact, Nick has been transformed once he discovered his “why” in life. This
revelation from God helped Nick live an intentional life, living every moment with kingdom
impact, stewarding his gifts, talents, resources, and opportunities as a response to His
calling in his life.

3. Do not take things for granted.


So many of us take things in our life for granted. The forgetfulness is real and insidious in
which we easily lose our perspective of what is really important in our lives. Learning about
Nick Vujicic has helped me better appreciate what I have instead of complaining about what
I lack. This is such a common epidemic we see in our world; always comparing yourself with
the better. Nick early on in his life achieved the seemingly impossible. He has learned to be
independent and take care of all his personal needs. He can do everything from brushing his
teeth, combing his hair, clothing, taking care of personal hygiene and even shaving. He
moves around the house by jumping around and, outside the house, he has an electric
wheelchair.

4. You cannot do it all alone


Despite Nick’s physical limitations and unfavorable circumstances, God has blessed him
with enormous success and influence early on his life. Nick says that everything has been a
grace and gift from God. Particularly, He has been a beneficiary of a supportive and
encouraging network of family, friends, and mentors. His parents taught Nick to become
independent. They showered him with God’s Scripture. They spoke affirming and
encouraging words which became daily sustenance for Nick’s hurtful childhood. Also, Nick
has been influenced by Billy Graham who has been his “evangelistic role model.” Nick says,
“Billy Graham helped me to make sure that my priorities are right..that faith and family come
first.”

5. Pride and Punishment in Deadalus and Icarus


Back in the day, the gods did not like it when humans tried to act like them by
overcoming their mortal limits. In ancient Greek culture, acting like a god was called "hubris",
and it was often severely punished. Flying through the air definitely constituted hubris, since
flight was supposed to be a strictly gods-only activity. Watching from the ground, shepherds
and plowmen even mistake Daedalus and Icarus for gods, since mortals had never before
achieved flight.
Of course, Daedalus and Icarus pay a price for overstepping their humanly bounds.
Icarus dies and Daedalus loses a child—lose-lose. It's an important lesson in humility, and

the wisdom of living within your limits. The myth seems to be saying that instead of wanting
something extraordinary (such as flying, or in Icarus' case, flying really high), we should
learn to be happy with what we already have.
Daedalus takes this lesson in humility to heart. It's not an accident that when he lands in
Sicily, he builds a temple to Apollo, the god of the sun. After watching his son be destroyed
by the sun, Daedalus has accepted that he's just not as powerful as the gods or nature. By
building the temple, he's essentially saying, "Sorry, Apollo. I totally respect you now. And just
to prove it, I built you this totally swanky house of worship, complete with a bunch of
beautiful statues."
In a bit of poetic justice, the writer Ovid says that Daedalus' nephew—whom Daedalus
had tried to kill by pushing him off the Acropolis—watches as the inventor performs the
funeral rites for his son. (Daedalus doesn't notice the nephew, since Athena had transformed
him into a partridge.) Apparently, Daedalus didn't think twice about pushing his nephew off a
cliff, but when his own son fell from a great height? Well, that's a different story.

APPLICATION
Write a persuasive essay about the causes and effects of bullying. Then be ready to
present a concise oral report on it. In preparing for an oral report, the following rubric would
guide you.

challenges that the boy experienced and how he overcome his personal challenges.

DAEDALUS AND ICARUS
Nick Pontikis

Daedalus– his name means “skilled worker”- was a famous architect, inventor, and
master craftsman known for having created many objects that figure prominently in various
myths. He had a beloved son named Icarus.

Among the many inventions and creations crafted by Daedalus were the wooden cow
he constructed for the Queen Pasiphae, the Labyrinth of the Minotaur at Knossos on the
island of Crete, artificial wings for himself and his son Icarus, and he was even said to have
invented images.

The infamous labyrinth was so cunningly crafted that Daedalus himself could barely
find his way out after constructing it. With countless winding passages and turns that opened
into one another, the Labyrinth appeared to have neither beginning nor end. Daedalus built
the maze to imprison the Minotaur, half man– half bull.

His homeland was Athens but his parentage is uncertain. Alcippe, Merope, and
Iphinoe are all mentioned at different times as being his mother. His father’s identity was
never precisely established, but many claim that it was Metion, son of Erectheus. For a short
time, his apprentice was his sister’s son Perdix. But Daedalus was so proud of his
achievements that he could not bear the idea of his rival. His sister had placed her son
Perdix under his charge to be taught the mechanical arts.

Perdix was an apt scholar and showed striking evidence of ingenuity. Walking on the
seashore, he picked up the spine of a fish. According to Ovid, imitating it, he took a piece of
iron and notched it on the edge, and thus invented the saw. Perdix also put two pieces of
iron together, connecting them at one end with a rivet, and sharpening the other ends, and
made a pair of compasses. Daedalus was so envious of his nephew’s accomplishments that
he seized an opportunity to toss him from the hill of the Acropolis. As he was plunging to his
death, however, the goddess Athena turned to Perdix into a partridge to save him.

Other sources claim instead that his apprentice was his nephew Talos. They say that
it was Talos, at the age of twelve, who displayed a skill that nearly rivaled his mentor’s.
Daedalus, fearing that the boy would surpass him in talent, murdered the boy by tossing him
from the Acropolis of Athens. He was then tried at the Areiopagus, which was the ancient
Greek court, and banished from his home city of Athens. He fled to the island of Crete,
where he began to work at the court of King Minos and Queen Pasipahe, in the magnificent
palace of Knossos. It is said that Daedalus was the first to conceive masts and sails for ships
for the navy of Minos, helping Crete become a naval power. The statues he carved were so
exquisite, they looked as if they were alive. It is said that they would have escaped were it
not for the chain that bound them to the palace wall. Daedalus also constructed a wooden
cow for the queen to hide in to satisfy her amorous longings for a white bull sent by
Poseidon.

When the dreadful Minotaur was born, Daedalus built the labyrinth to contain the
monstrous half– man, half– bull. For years, Minos demanded a tribute of youths from Athens
to feed the creature as punishment for the accidental killing of his son while he was visiting
Athens. Eventually, the Athenian hero, Theseus, came to Crete to attempt to slay the
Minotaur. Princess Ariadne, daughter of King Minos and Queen Pasiphae, fell in love with
Theseus and asked Daedalus to help him. Daedalus gave her a flaxen thread for Theseus to

tie to the door of the Labyrinth as he entered, and by which he could find his way out after
killing the monster. Theseus succeeded, and escaped Crete with Ariadne.

Minos, enraged at the loss of his daughter not to mention the killing of his pet
Minotaur, shut Daedalus and his son Icarus into the Labyrinth, knowing that Theseus could
not have accomplished the deed without inside help. Daedalus managed to get out of the
Labyrinth– after all, he had built it and knew his way around. Daedalus decided that he and
his son Icarus had to leave Crete and get away from Minos, before he brought them harm.
However, Minos controlled the sea around Crete. The King kept strict watch on all vessels,
permitting none to sail without being carefully searched by his soldiers. Since Minos
controlled the land and sea routes, and there was no route of escape there. Daedalus
realized that the only way out was by air. But only the gods can fly.

To escape, Daedalus built wings for himself and Icarus, fashioned with feathers held
together with wax. Daedalus tried the wings on himself first and was satisfied that his plan
would work. Before taking off from the island, Daedalus warned his son to follow closely
behind him. He sternly cautioned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, as it would melt his
wings, and not too close to the sea, as it would dampen them and make it hard to fly.

They successfully flew from Crete, but Icarus grew exhilarated by the thrill of flying
and began getting careless. The father and son passed the islands of Samos, Delos and
Lebynthos, and the further away from Crete they flew, the cockier became Icarus. Forgetting
his father’s stern advice, Icarus flew too close to the sun god Helios, who was pulling the sun
behind his chariot high in the sky. The wax holding together his wings softened and melted
from the heat and try as he might, Icarus could not prevent the feathers at all were left and
he fell to his death, drowning in the sea, as his helpless father watched his son perish with
anguish. His father cried, bitterly lamenting his own arts, and called the land near the place
where Icarus fell into the ocean Icaria in memory of his child. The Icarian Sea, where he fell,
was forever named after him and it is said that the great hero Heracles (Hercules), who was
passing by, gave him proper burial.

Daedalus grieved for his dead son and then continued to Sicily, where he came to
stay at the court of Cocalus in a place called Camicus. On the island’s south coast,
Daedalus built a temple for Apollo, ang hung up his wings, as an offering to the Olympian
god. But vengeful King Minos wasn’t quite done– he then went in pursuit of Daedalus,
hoping to locate and trick the great inventor into revealing himself. At each day he visited,
Minos offered a reward to whoever could thread a spiral seashell, a seemingly impossible
task. Eventually, Minos came to Camicus in Sicily and presented the contest at Cocalus’
court.

Cocalus knew of Daedalus’ talents, and gave the shell to him. The clever Daedalus
tied the string to an ant, place the ant at one end of the shell, and allowed the ant to walk
through the spiral chambers until it came out the other end. When Minos saw that someone
had solved the puzzled, he demanded that Cocalus surrender Daedalus, for he insisted that
only he would have been inventive enough to solve the task. King Cocalus promised to do
so, but he persuaded Minos to first take a bath and stay for some entertainment.

Minos agreed, and was consequently murdered by Cocalus’ daughters, who had
been totally impressed by the toys and gifts which Daedalus had bestowed upon them.
Daedalus eventually left Camicus, much to the dismay of King Cocalus and his daughters,
and ended up in Sardinia with a group led by Lolaus, who was a nephew of Heracles.
