BODY FAT DETERMINATION

Prepared By:
Charina Gail O. Baloy, RPh, MSc.(c.)
Adipocytes
■ also known as fat cells or adipose cells
■ connective tissues that functions to store triglycerides or
fats
■ together with muscles, hold anatomic structures in the
body in place
■ serve as cushion to force in areas of the body like the
abdomen and the buttocks
■ provide the body insulation to prevent excessive loss of
heat
Fats

■ dietary substances that are rich in energy and functions as

primary energy providers and as energy stores
■ can be obtained from diet and also be synthesized from
glucose or amino acids through lipogenesis
*Whenever a person consumes more calories needed to satisfy their ATP needs, excess
dietary carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are converted into triglycerides stored in
adipocytes. If the need of excess energy arise, fats are released from adipocytes to be
used to generate ATP*
Normal Body Fat Pecentage
(American Council on Exercise)

■ a measure for indicating nutritional status in adults
■ defined as a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the
square of the person’s height in metres
■ does not measure body fat directly
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝐾𝑔
■ 𝐵𝑀𝐼 = (ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠)2
