Heat Treatment of Steel

Shop Exercise 8

OBJECTIVES:

1) For the student to understand the heat treatment process

2) To differentiate between the various process of heat treatment like Annealing, Normalizing and

Hardening/Tempering processes

3) To be able to distinguish the various temperatures by visualization of the hot steel color needed

to heat treat a specific steel grade

ToPIC QUESTIONS:

1) What is heat treatment? DEFINE in complete detail.

Heat treatment of steels is the heating and cooling of metals to change their physical
and mechanical properties, without letting it change its shape. Heat treatment could be said to
be a method for strengthening materials but could also be used to alter some mechanical
properties such as improving formability, machining, etc. The most common application is
metallurgical but heat treatment of metals can also be used in the manufacture of glass,
aluminum, steel and many more materials.
The process of heat treatment involves the use of heating or cooling, usually to extreme
temperatures to achieve the desired result. It is a very important manufacturing processes that
can not only help the manufacturing process but can also improve product, its performance, and
its characteristics in many ways

2) What are the various types of heat treatment? Identify all then define each one.

3) Identify the tools and equipment are required to heat treat metals? Why?

4) Why is heat treatment necessary in steel processes?

5) What is the color of steel when heated to 750C? identify the characteristics of the heated steel

when in this temperature.

6) What is the color of steel when heated to 1200C? identify the characteristics during this state of

temperature.

7) How is steel annealed? Normalized? Tempered? Draw the flowchart diagram of each one and

represent/provide color photos of the colors of steel involved with each process.

8) What PPE are required when heat treating steel? Identify them and state the reasons why.

9) Draw the heat treatment graph/diagram of steel and identify the various heat treatment
processes (Annealing, Normalizing/Hardening/Tempering) versus the temperature.

10) What are the best steels used for knife making? Why so?

CONCLUSION

1) For the student to understand the heat treatment process

2) To differentiate between the various process of heat treatment like Annealing, Normalizing and

Hardening/Tempering processes
