1. The figure shows a welded joint subjected to an eccentric load of 20 KN.

Find
the size of weld. Take permissible shear stress for the weld material as 90 MPa.

2. A hydrodynamic full journal bearing is to carry a load of 25 kN at a speed of

3000 rpm. The journal diameter is 150 mm and the length of bearing is 75 mm.
Assume an operating temperature of 60 C. If the radial clearance 0.075mm.
Design the journal bearing . Also calculate the power lost in friction, minimum oil
film thickness and the rise in temperature.

3. The operating schedule of a ball bearing is as follows

Radial load of 1650 N at 2000 rpm for 5% of life time

Radiator of 1140 N at 3300 rpm for 15% of time

Radial load of 560 N at 1750 rpm for 35% of time and

Radial load of 445 N at 2200 rpm for 45% of the time

The inner ring rotates and the loads are steady. The life is to be 10 years at 2 hours
per day operation. Select a suitable ball bearing.

4. Design a knuckle joint to connect two mild steel rods to sustain an axial pull of
150 KN .The pin and the rods are made of same material Assume the working
stress in the material as 150 MPa in tension, 40 MPa in shear and 120 MPA in
crushing.
5. One end of a rectangular bar of 120 mm × 70 mm cross section is welded to a
vertical support by four fillet welds along its circumstance. A steady transverse
load of 10 KN is applied at the free end of the bar of Length 160 mm and is
parallel to 120 m Side.Determine the size of the weld, if the allowable stress in the
material is limited to 115 MPa.

6. Design a spigot and socket type cotter joint for axial load of 75 kN which
alternately changes from tensile to compressive The allowable stresses for the
material used are 50 MPa in tensions, 40 MPa in shear and 100 MPa in crushing.

7. A bracket is fixed to column by means of five bolts as shown in figure 1 to carry

a load of 15 kN .Calculated diameter of the bolts required if the allowable shear
Stress for bolt material is 60MPa.
8. A fillet welded bracket as shown in figure carries a load or 50kN. Calculate the
size of the weld if the allowable shear stress 80 N/mm2

9. Design a full journal bearing to support a load of 45 kN at 600 pm. The oil used
is light transmission oil. The journal diameter is 80 mm. Take room temperature as
211̊ C and the oil temperature as 801̊ C .Make proper assumptions wherever
necessary and design the bearing for hydrodynamic condition, acceptable
coefficient of friction and heat balance.

10.Design a connecting rod of petrol engine from the following data :

Cylinder bore = 110 mm Speed = 125 mm

Length of = 300 mm Maximum = 3 N/mm2

connecting rod explosion
pressure
mass of the = 22 kg Compression = 7 :1
reciprocating ratio
parts

With proper assumptions design the section, big end and small one of the
connecting rod.
