So you want to apply for a study exchange in Poland, but have no previous
experience with culture nor the customs? Fear no more, because after reading
this article you will discover everything you need know before travelling to the
land of borscht and pierogi.

At your arrival you might face some “unusual” customs . A lot of people in
Poland greet each other by giving kiss on the cheeks. It’s not always a sign of
affection, but more of a friendly gesture. Another unspoken rule can await you
at people’s doorstep. The fact that you should take off your shoes may not be
the most surprising thing in the world, but you should also expect to be offered
slippers to wear. In some cases you can refuse, but generally the host will
kindly insist, especially if you’re not wearing socks. One thing that might really
surprise you is that Poles do not use clothes dryers. Instead, we just hang wet
clothes on strings and let them dry slowly.

Another interesting aspect of living in Poland is public transport. There are

some general rules you should obey if you don’t want to be considered a jerk.
While getting on a bus, train, etc, you should always wait for people to come
out first, otherwise you will create unnecessary conflict. You should also
remember that elders and pregnant women should sit first and as a younger
person you’re expected to give them your seat.

These are some basic things you should know before going to Poland. The
family you will stay with should introduce you to the rest of the habits and
customs. Don’t feel stressed about not being prepared enough. People in
Poland are usually really helpful and will understand that you may not know
everything immediately. Just stay open-minded.
