 SOCIO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTS

1. As the distances within the city grew, the transport system had to be modernised.
2. In 1901, Jamshedji Tata was the first Indian to own a car.
3. By 1911 motorised taxis were already plying in Bombay.
4. The cotton mill industry was adversely affected during 1900 and 1901 due to the flight of workers because of the plague.
5. By 1900, 45 trains of Western Railway in each direction were carrying over one million passengers annually.
6. In 1980, Franciscan Missionary Brothers, a German Missionary established St Francis D'Assisi High School in Borivali, west
suburbs of Mumbai, India.
7. Shortly after the horse-drawn tram system closed down, in 1907, the Bombay Electric Supply and Tramways Company
(B.E.S.T.) purchased Bombay Tramway Company Limited (B.T.C.L.) and began operating the city’s first electric tram system.
Unlike the horse-drawn tram system, the electric tram system was incredibly popular with local residents because of the price and
comfort of the system. Soon after, the company added additional routes to the tram network, introduced a double decker tram,
and even began a bus service throughout the city.
 POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
On 22 July 1908, Lokmanya Tilak, the principal advocate of the Swadeshi movement in Bombay, was sentenced to six years
rigorous imprisonment, on the charge of writing inflammatory articles against the Government in his newspaper Kesari. The
arrest led to huge scale protests across the city.
 ARCHITECTURAL DEVELOPMENS
Taj Mahal Palace Hotel has acquired an image trademark. It is the first building in the country to get intellectual property rights
protection for its architectural design. It was completed on 16 December 1903, by Architect Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya and D. N.
Mirza.
