To,

Bain & Company

Dear Madam/Sir,
I am writing to apply for the position of Associate Consultant at Bain & Co. I am currently in my fifth
year, pursuing a dual degree in Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science.
There are three primary reasons why I aspire to work as a management consultant – exposure to
various industries, opportunity to work with world leaders and the thrill of working on intellectually
stimulating real life problems. Being new to the corporate world, I want to work on diverse sectors
to acquire a better insight into their prospects at an initial point of my career. At the same time,
working with CXOs & senior executives of the top firms can help me learn about businesses from the
people who are the best at it. This is an invaluable and a rare experience for a fresh graduate. Finally,
solving interesting situations with a team of most talented individuals will give me a chance to learn
from them and develop excellent leadership, adaptability and soft skills at the same time.
During my stay at IIT Bombay, I spent a considerable amount of time and effort working as a part of
the institute’s annual cultural festival – Mood Indigo, first as a Marketing Core Group member and
then as the Overall Coordinator. The former gave me an opportunity to work with professionals in
high ranking firms, closely coordinating with their operations teams to execute on-ground marketing
campaigns. During the tenure, I enhanced my pressure handling and time management abilities while
expanding my communication skills during my interaction with sponsors.
As the Overall Coordinator, I had the responsibility of formulating a vision for the fest while managing
a team of 22 talented individuals and collaborating with the institute authorities. In the course of
improving upon the former structures and innovating new ones, I worked by assessing audience
demands and planned correspondingly. While motivating my team to bring out the best in them, I
gained substantial experience of working with people and honed my leadership skills.
During the summer following my fourth year, I interned at Ernst & Young Services, which gave me a
hands on experience in the management consultancy field by conducting industry interviews,
analyzing data and being a part of client presentations. The sense of accomplishment after solving a
real life problem motivated me to take up consulting as a job option after graduation.
Bain stands out in the consulting space because of its focus on delivering results rather than
producing lists of recommendations. As it is the way forward in this industry, especially in the
developing markets, I want to be a part of this progressive approach. Bain is regarded as the “Best
firm to work for” by the Consulting magazine. The fact that it has a global induction programme for
the freshly hired ACs clearly shows how much the firm values and invests in their employees from
the very first day. Finally, it’s the people that work in a firm who are the biggest contributors to the
firm’s image and legacy. Having personally interacted with some extremely talented yet humble
seniors who are now in Bain, inspires me to be a part of the team.
I look forward to speaking with you to discuss the possibility of joining Bain and Company. Thank
you in advance for your time and your consideration of my candidacy.
Yours sincerely,
Vishesh Sharma
