Transfer Processes (TFP260S) Tutorial 5 25 – 04 - 2019

Question 1
A counter-flow double-pipe heat exchanger is to heat water from 20oC to 80oC at a rate of 1.2
kg/s. The heating is to be accomplished by geothermal water available at 160oC at a mass flow
rate of 2 kg/s. The inner tube is thin-walled and has a diameter of 1.5 cm. The overall heat
transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger is 640 W/m2 K. Using the effectiveness-NTU method
determine the length of the heat exchanger required to achieve the desired heating?
Ans: 109 m
Question 2
A counter-flow, concentric tube heat exchanger is used to cool the lubricating oil for a large industrial
gas turbine engine. The flow rate of cooling water through the inner tube (Di = 25 mm) is 0.2 kg/s,
while the flow rate of oil through the outer annulus (Do = 45 mm) is 0.1 kg/s. The oil and water enter
at temperatures of 100 and 30oC, respectively. How long must the tube be made if the outlet
temperature of the oil is to be 60oC? (Hint: Take the properties of water at 35oC)
Ans: 66 m

Question 3
A 2-shell passes and 4-tube passes heat exchanger is used to heat glycerin from 20oC to 50oC by
hot water, which enters the thin-walled 2-cm-diameter tubes at 80oC and leaves at 40oC. The total
length of the tubes in the heat exchanger is 60 m. The convection heat transfer coefficient is 25
W/m2 K on the glycerin (shell) side and 160 W/m2 K on the water (tube) side. Determine the rate
of heat transfer in the heat exchanger
(a) Before any fouling and
(b) After fouling with a fouling factor of 0.0006 m2K/W occurs on the outer surfaces of the tubes.
(c) What will be the cost of energy in (a) and (b) assuming the heat exchanger is operated 5 hours
per day for 10 days. (1 kwh = R 1.82)
Ans: (a) 1830 W, R167; (b) 1805 W, R165
Question 4
A fine wire having a diameter of 0.02 mm is maintained at a constant temperature of 54oC by an
electric current. The wire is exposed to air at 1 atm and 0oC. Calculate the electric power
necessary to maintain the wire temperature if the length is 50 cm.
Ans: 0.836 W
Question 5
Calculate for the following cases, the surface area required for a heat exchanger, which is
required to cool 3200 kg/h of benzene (cp = 1.74 kJ/kgoC) from 72oC to 42oC. The cooling water
(cp = 4.18 kJ/kgoC) at 15oC has a flow rate of 2200 kg/h. Overall heat transfer coefficient for each

configuration can be taken as 0.28 kW/m2 oC

a) Single pass counter flow
b) 1 – 4 exchanger (one shell pass and four tube passes)
c) Cross flow single pass with water mixed and benzene unmixed
Ans: (a) 5.1 m2; (b) 5.66 m2; (c) 5.54 m2

Question 6
The condenser of a large steam power plant is a heat exchanger in which steam is condensed to
liquid water. Assume the condenser to be a shell-and-tube heat exchanger consisting of a single
shell and 30,000 tubes, each executing two passes. The tubes are of thin wall construction with D
= 25 mm, and steam condenses on their outer surface with an associated convection coefficient of
ho =11,000 W/m2K. The heat transfer rate that must be effected by the exchanger is q = 2 x109
W, and this is accomplished by passing cooling water through the tubes at a rate of 3 x104 kg/s
(the flow rate per tube is therefore1 kg/s). The water enters at 20oC, while the steam condenses at
50oC. What is the temperature of the cooling water emerging from the condenser? What is the
required tube length L per pass? (Hint: Take the properties of water at 27oC)
Ans: 4.51 m

Question 7
Water is boiled at a rate of 25 kg/h in a polished copper pan, 280 mm in diameter at atmospheric
pressure. Assuming nucleate boiling conditions, calculate the temperature of the bottom surface
of the pan? Ans: 112.2oC
