THEORY BEHIND THE EXPERIMENT

The step down transformer is used to convert a large AC signal to small AC signal.
This AC signal is converted into DC signal by the bridge rectifier capacitor filter
reduces the AC ripples represents in the DC output and this signal is given to the
regulator IC to get a constant DC +5 volt output.

In the above circuit diagram, during the positive half cycle of the AC input
terminal A becomes positive and the terminal B becomes negative. Therefore
forward biasing the diode D2 and D4 , during the negative half cycle A becomes
negative and the terminal B becomes positive. Thereby forward biasing diode D1
and D3, creating supply on the pin number 1 and 2 of the regulator IC.

The unregulated DC output consists of AC ripples. In order to remove this AC

ripples , we use capacitor filter connected between pin number 1 and 2 of the
regulator IC. Altering this phase , the output can be observed from pin number 2
and 3 of the regulated IC.

SHORT PROCEDURE:
1. Construct a circuit using printed circuit board.
2. Connect multimeter to the output of the regulator IC to monitor the
voltage.
3. As soon as the power supply is provided the constant +5V DC output can be
observed.
