ROTOR SIZING
Forewords:
The aim of rotor sizing is to select the suitable rotor according to the pumping conditions.
Optimal rotor and stator tightening will ensure the best compromise between
performances (‐1) and Runlife (+1).
Rotor sizing permits to optimize Rotor/Stator fit by anticipating the two main phenomena
that occurs downhole : Elastomer Thermal expansion due to downhole Temperature
Elastomer Swelling due to Oil and Aromatics
Light Oils usually contain BTEX(*) aromatics that conduct to Elastomer swelling .
Swelling effect shall be anticipated by reducing rotor size in order to obtain optimal
rotor and stator tightening after elastomer swelling.
Pump swelling usually occurs during the 3 first week after that the pump was run in hole.
This is the reason why some wells did not produce immediatly after pump installation
if swelling is expected.
Note: Overtightening will conduct to pump destruction in shorter time than expected
In case of very viscous fluid (extra heavy oil) the Fluid viscosity will compensate
a low tightening (internal leakage is reduced). However even if Oil is viscous,
the effect of a high water cut will be a low global Fluid viscosity.
For sandy wells in case of early failures by abrasion , a more important tightening
is to be considered to increase Runlife (reduction of internal leakage
will reduce abrasion effect).
Water cut:
if WC > 95% and Extra heavy Oil => consider heavy Oil
if WC > 95% and ligth Oil => consider medium Oil
(*) BTEX: benzene, toluene,Ethyl Benzene, xylene

ROTOR SIZING
ROTOR SIZING SELECTION: Example:
48E in 159, Medium Oil 20°API,
downhole temperature 50°C, WC 10%
Step 1: temperature size Step 1:
Downhole pumping Temperature and Rotor Rotor Size Table:
size table conduct to a size selection downhole temperature 50°C
between 01 to 14 => Rotor temperature size = W07
Step 2: reference table size Step 2:
According to the pump model Reference Table: 48E in 159
and required elastomer => RT‐1 thus W06
Step 3: Oil table
According to oil type Oil Table: Medium Oil 20°API
note : °API is usefull if no other data =>STEP2+1 thus RT+1‐1 = W07
Swelling test is preferred
ROTOR SIZING SELECTION: Example:
24E in 204, Light Oil 28°API,
Swelling: 2%
Step 1: temperature size Mechanical propertie not affected
Downhole pumping Temperature and Rotor Downhole temperature 70°C, WC 10%
size table conduct to a size selection
between 01 to 14 Step 1:
Rotor Size Table:
Step 2: reference table size downhole temperature 70°C
According to the pump model => Rotor temperature size = W08 for 65°C
and required elastomer or W09 for 80°C
Step 2:
Step 3: Oil table Reference Table: 24E in 204
According to swelling test result downhole Temp below 80°C
=> RT‐1 thus W07 or W08
Step 3: Swelling
RT + 0 up to 2% or RT + 1 between
2% and 4%
As we do not want to cumulate rotor over or
undersized, we can consider:
W08 for 65°C, RT‐1 (step 2), RT+1 (2 or 4%) = W08
OR
W09 for 80°C, RT‐1 (step 2), RT+0 (up to 2%) = W08
