1. Purpose
To inform all ASCs of method to test for SIM fault symptoms on Galaxy S4 (GT-I9505) and
recommended service action
2. Symptom
Intermittent or permanent SIM detection fail (No SIM)
3. Instruction
If result of Part A is that there is no damage to SIM reader (and there is no SIM / SD
card FPCB module fault) then please go to Part B
Part B: Initial PBA check for open circuit between C224 and C933
If open circuit between C224 and C933 is identified then please see Appendix 1 advice
is to be followed (i.e. replace PBA) - if not go to "Part C"

Part A: SIM reader (i.e. SIM / SD card FPCB module fault) check
If customer reports Intermittent or permanent SIM detection fail for GT-I9505 please first check
the SIM reader (SIM / SD card FPCB module) for:
Damage to SIM reader: If the SIM reader is damaged then device should be treated as
Out of warranty case.

If there is no damage to the SIM reader (and the SIM / SD card FPCB module is not the cause
of the fault) please go to "Part B".

If customer reports Intermittent or permanent SIM detection fail for GT-I9505 please check for
OPEN Circuit using a Resistance meter between C224 and C933 as shown in below diagram:
If there is an open circuit between C224 and C933 then the repair action is to replace the PBA.
Please also see Appendix 1 for further advice if open circuit identified.
If there is no open circuit identified between C224 and C933 please follow advice in Part C.

Part C: Process if "no open circuit" identified between C224 and C933 - Check Voltage level for
"SIM VCC"
1) Check Voltage level for "SIM VCC" after starting boot-up the device.
Please see picture below for the test point to check "SIM VCC":
Please note: When you check "SIM VCC", the rear cover and screw must be assembled
i.e. fitted to the device being tested.
To enable you to check "SIM VCC" with the rear cover and screws fitted, please create a "test
rear cover" by making a test rear cover from a SPARE PART in which you make a hole to
access the test point to check for "SIM VCC.
Refer to below picture to see where a hole should be made in your "Test" rear cover:

2) Test: "SIM VCC" Voltage; If SIM VCC voltage level is similar to the "Malfunction case",
there is problem with the "NFC IC". (e.g. a dry solder joint or possible faulty NFC IC)

That is, do not re-solder or replace NFC IC as advised in previous versions of this guide -
Please replace the PBA instead.

Appendix 1: for further advice if open circuit identified between C224 and C933
If open circuit identified between C224 and C933 please replace PBA
Please ensure you use Symptom code ‘76C – Memory card / SIM card storage problem’
Please note: the tests provided in Parts B and C may also be applied to PBA to be used as the
Replacement PBA.
