Summer Break!
Teacher Directions
This activity is intended to be used during the first week
of school.

Distribute the student directions page, titled “Extra!

Extra!!” This gives your students everything they need
to know about creating their story.

They will brainstorm ideas onto the page with the boxes
that prompt them to remember different parts of
their summer. They can write sentences, bullet points,
draw pictures, etc. in order to get their ideas out.

For the rough draft, have students use lined paper

from your classroom supplies so that they can use this
to revise and edit their stories. When they have
completed this step, they are ready for their final draft.

I have created 2 pages for the final draft. The first

page should include the title of their story and the byline
(their name). The second page can be used if their
story is longer than one page. (You can also reproduce
this many times for any stories that are longer than 2
pages)

Encourage them to write as much as they can and

include as many details as possible!

We want to read all about your summer!

Think of all of the amazing experiences you had this

summer, and brainstorm them into a newspaper
article. From there, you are going to summarize your
summer into a short story.

Directions:

1. Use the newspaper outline to brainstorm, make lists,

and draw pictures to illustrate your ideas.

2. Write a rough draft of the story of your summer on

lined paper. Make sure that your story has a beginning,
middle, and end. Include creative language and as much
detail as possible so we feel like we were there!

3. Use the final draft paper to write the final draft of

your story. Be sure to revise and edit your rough draft
before completing your final draft. Remember to write
in your best handwriting!
