Police is an official force whose job is to maintain public order, deal with crime, and

make people obey the law.

Police officers provide protection to the general public. They work for local or national police departments
and perform a variety of duties, including patrolling neighborhoods, directing traffic and investigating crimes.

Police officers are also expected to be constantly alert and exercise sound judgment in threatening situations.
Police work brings with it inherent danger and stress, so mental fortitude and resilience is important.

But do you think all police officers are performing their job responsibly? According to my personal
observation, some of them were not.

In the Philippines, incidents of crime and violence involving policemen are usually treated as individual
acts of misbehavior, and are attributed to the idea that there are a few "bad apples" in every barrel.

Terms like "scalawags" and "erring policemen" are commonly used to describe cops who have broken
the law. The fact is, these events are commonplace and indicate a much deeper problem, as well as a
complete refusal of the senior leadership to treat the situation with the seriousness it deserves.
Do Filipinos really deserve a police force with a sullied image, lawmen who betray the trust bestowed on
them when they are armed and equipped to uphold the law, cops who make a mockery of their sworn duty
when they become criminals themselves?

The sheer number of policemen believed to be corrupt is staggering. While Gen. Bato used to say that not
more than one percent of the entire PNP are scalawags, President Rodrigo Duterte himself believes that as
much as four in ten are misfits.

The fact that police abuse remains a significant problem does not mean there has been no progress. To
fight police abuse effectively, you must have realistic expectations. You must not expect too much of
any one remedy because no single remedy will cure the problem.

Perhaps the least that we can do is to trust this issue to our beloved President Rodrigo Rua Duterte that
he could solve this before his term ends.
