Schedule and Section:

Objective:

1. To determine the reaction of positive ions in salt solutions with sodium hydroxide solution.

2. To write the chemical reaction of positive ion in salt solution with sodium hydroxide.

Introduction

Sodium hydroxide is a base that reacts with aqueous solution containing metallic ions. The
hydroxide ion reacts with metallic ions to form a precipitate which is solid. In this activity, you will learn how
to conduct these tests and interpret the results.

Materials Required:

- Salt solutions
- Test tube rack
- Test tubes
- Pipets

Procedure:
1. Prepare a 0.5 M of sodium hydroxide.
2. Prepare a 0.2 M of the following salts:
a. CaCl2-2H2O
b. CuSO4-5H2O
c. MgCl₂-4H2O
d. NiSO₄-6H2O
e. BaCl₂-2H2O
3. Put 3 mL of 0.2 M calcium chloride in the test tube.
4. Add a few drops of 0.5 M Sodium hydroxide and note your observations in the table.
5. Repeat 3 and 4 for other salts.

Results:
