HW 4

1. Let f (x) = x1/3 for x ≥ 0. Show that f is differentiable over x > 0 with f 0 (x) = 31 x−2/3 .

2. Let f (x) = x2 for rational x and f (x) = 0 for irrational x. Prove that
(a) f is continuous at 0,
(b) f is discontinuous at x 6= 0,
(c) f is differentiable at 0.
3. Let f be defined on R, such that |f (x) − f (y)| ≤ (x − y)2 for all x, y ∈ R. Prove that f is a constant function.
4. Suppose f is twice differentiable on an open interval I and f 00 (x) = 0 for all x ∈ I. Show that f has the form
f (x) = ax + b for suitable constants a and b.
5. Prove that if f and g are differentiable on R, f (0) = g(0), and f 0 (x) ≤ g 0 (x) for all x, then f (x) ≤ g(x) for x ≥ 0.
6. Let f be differentiable on R with a = sup{|f 0 (x)| : x ∈ R} < 1.
(a) Pick x0 ∈ R, and define xn = f (xn−1 ) for n ≥ 1. Prove that {xn } is a convergent sequence.
Hint: You might want to show that xn+1 − xn ≤ a(xn − xn−1 ).
(b) Prove that f has a fixed point, i.e., there exists s ∈ R such that s = f (s).
7. Find the limits
(a) limx→0 (1 + 2x)1/x
(b) limy→∞ (1 + y2 )y
(c) limx→∞ (ex + x)1/x
nx
8. Let fn (x) = 1+nx for x ∈ [0, ∞).

(a) Find f (x) = limn→∞ fn (x).

(b) Does fn → f uniformly on [0, 1]?
(c) Does fn → f uniformly on [1, ∞)?
