I. Two blocks A and B are resting against a wall and a floor as shown in figure . Find the
range of values of P applied to the lower block for which the system remains in
equilibrium. Co-efficient of friction is 0.25 at the floor and 0.3at the wall and 0.2
between the blocks.

I 3. A uniform ladder of 5 m long weighs 200 N. it is placed against a vertical wall with
which it makes an angle of 30°. The co-efficient of friction between the wall and the
ladder is 0.25 and that between the floor and the ladder is 0.35. The ladder in addition
to its own weight has to support a load of 1000N at the top end. Find i) the horizontal
force P to be applied at the floor level to prevent slipping. ii) if the force P is not
applied, what should be the minimum inclination of the ladder with the horizontal so
that there is no slipping of it with the load at its top.

4. Two blocks A and B weighing 3 kN and 1 kN are connected by a ire passing over a
smooth frictionless pulley as shown in figure. Determine the magnitude of forc e P
requ ired to prevent mo vement of block A down the plane. Take co-efficeint of friction
between the pl anes and blocks as 0.2

5. A ladder 5 meters long rests on a horizontal ground and leans against a smooth
vertical wall at an angle 70° with the horizontal. The weight of the ladder is 900 N
and acts at its middle. The ladder is at the point of sliding, when a man weighing
750N stands on a rung 1.5 metre from the bottom of the ladder. Calculate the
coefficient of friction between the ladder and the floor

7. A simply supported beam AB of span 4 mis carrying a point loads of 5, 2 and 3 kN


at I, 2 and 3 m respectively from the support A. Calculate the reactions at the supports
A and B.
8. Two blocks A and B of weights 500 N and 1000 N are placed on an .1.nclined plane.
The blocks are connected by a string to the parallel plane. The coeffcient of frictio~
between the inclined plane and the block A is 0.15 and that for the block Bis 0.4. Fnd
the inclination of the plane when ~he motion is about to take place. Also calculate the
tension in the string
