MA5300 Broadband Access System Chapter 1 System Overview
1.1 Preface
Huawei MA5300 Broadband Access System (called the MA5300 for short) is a L2/L3
IP Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) device. Located in the edge of
access layer in a broadband network, the MA5300 supports Asymmetric digital
Subscriber Line (ADSL), Very-high-data-bit Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL), and xDSL
services. It also supports IP multicasting, 802.1X authentication services, QoS/ACL
services, cluster management services and has a built-in Broadband Access Server
(BAS).
The MA5300 offers a solution to the “last mile" access. It provides the following
services and functionalities:
VDSL service
ADSL service
Ethernet service
VDSL, ADSL and Ethernet service simultaneously
Multicasting and multicast service management
802.1X authentication
A variety of QoS/ACL services
Cluster management functions
Providing the built-in BAS to enhance user management, service control,
charging, etc. It also provides VLAN authentication, PPPoE authentication and
charging according to traffic and accessed time duration.
The MA5300 uses Ethernet, VDSL and ADSL technologies. Its large-capacity
backplane, distributed & modular design ensures its reliability and guarantees multi-
interface & multi-service provisioning. It features scalability and manageability.
The MA5300 supports L2/L3 line speed switching. It is capable of packet forwarding
at the rate of 13.2Mpps. The switching capacity reaches 32Gbit/s.

MA5300 Broadband Access System Chapter 1 System Overview
The MA5300 can offer various kinds of Fast Ethernet (FE) interfaces and Gigabit
Ethernet (GE) interfaces through subboard on the main control board and on the BAS
board. Interfaces available include 100Base-TX electrical interface, 100Base-FX
single-mode optical interface, 100Base-FX multi-mode optical interface, 1000Base-
SX multi-mode optical interface and 1000Base-LX single-mode optical interface.
The MA5300 supports VDSL, ADSL and Ethernet service. It is suitable for different
networking environments and satisfies different subscriber requirements.
VDSL delivers high-bandwidth data rate over existing twisted pairs, without interfering
with the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS). VDSL technology is symmetric. It
transmits 12Mbit/s downstream and upstream over length of 1500m.
ADSL technology is asymmetric. The upstream rate is as much as 896kbit/s, and the
downstream rate reaches 8160kbit/s. The transmission distance is in the range of
3000m~5000m.
The MA5300 supports multicast protocols. It enables value added multicast services
and management of multicast services. To be specific, it supports:
IGMP Snooping multicast protocol
User authentication and accounting in compliance with IEEE 802.1X
When the built-in BAS is used, MA5300 also supports IGMP multicast protocol
and accomplishes user group management through IGMP and IGMP snooping
protocols. It will keep a track of adding and leaving multicast groups and realizes
multicast packet copying.

made based on the type of service (ToS) in compliance with IEEE 802.1p.
Differentiated service is supported.
Adjust bandwidth based on the port, MAC address, IP address and TCP, UDP
port number.
Support three queue scheduling algorithms: priority queue (PQ), weighted round
robin (WRR) and WRR with maximum delay.
Support flow-based packet processing including packet filtering, redirection,
traffic mirroring, and traffic statistics.
The MA5300 can be configured with a built-in BAS, or an external BAS, to provide a
variety of means of user authentication and accounting.
When equipped with a built-in BAS, the MA5300 supports a variety of authentication
means, including PPPoE, VLAN binding, VLAN + Web (forced Portal or built-in
Portal). Accounting is performed flexibly by traffic volume or by connection time.
The MA5300 features high integration in that it integrates data switching, routing and
user management. It supports both ADSL and VDSL services by configuring different
service boards. A variety of interfaces are available by configuring different
subboards. The MA5300 provides 336 VDSL interfaces. Alternatively, it provides 672
ADSL interfaces, eight FE interfaces (or four FE + two GE interfaces). The MA5300
supports a maximum of four frame cascading. In such case, it supports up to 1344
VDSL or 2688 ADSL subscribers.

MA5300 Broadband Access System Chapter 1 System Overview
The MA5300 takes the following measures to ensure the network security.
Unauthorized user access is denied by means of configuring user name,
password and user access authority.
Command lines are hierarchically protected to prevent unauthorized use.
User isolation can be implemented in the L2 and mutual access is under control,
to prevent illegal user access.
Number of hosts allowed to access on each port is restricted.
Number of multicast groups allowed to access on each port is restricted.
Supporting reverse inquiry of MAC addresses
Supporting MAC address binding
Supporting IP address binding
Port spoofing is prevented by specialized mechanism.
Dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server is protected against illegal
attack.
Supporting BAS function, such as providing online log
The MA5300 provides a variety of subscriber ports, including VDSL, ADSL, LINE,
FE/GE ports to cater for different networking environments and subscriber demands.
I. VDSL interface
The MA5300 provides VDSL interface to connect with remote transceiver unit (RTU)
over twisted pairs.

The MA5300 also provides ADSL interface to connect with RTU over twisted pairs.
ADSL interface has the following characteristics:
It uses Discrete Multi-tone (DMT). The interface specifications comply with ITU-T
Recommendation G.992.1 (G.dmt), G.992.2 (G.lite) and ANSI T1.413.
Port rate can be configured flexibly. ADSL interface can adjust the port rate
automatically according to the line condition at the initialization stage with
32kbit/s steps. In addition, the port rate can be configured manually.
It provides over-current and over-voltage protection to avoid accidents like surge
current, lightning strike, and power line contact which endanger equipment
security.
The MA5300 can be connected with the subscribers via LINE interface over twisted
pairs. It filters POTS signals from xDSL signals.
The MA5300 GE/FE interface can be used as either subscriber interface or network
interface. When GE/FE interface is used as subscriber interface, the MA5300 can be
connected with the L2 switch (like Huawei S2403, S3026, S3026V) over optical fiber
or category-5 twisted pairs, to allow Ethernet and VDSL access. Three kinds of FE
interfaces exist: 100Base-TX interface, 100Base-FX single-mode interface and multi-
mode interface. Two kinds of GE interfaces exist: 1000Base-LX single-mode and
1000Base-SX single-mode.

Through the 100Base-FX multi-mode interface, the MA5300 can be connected with a
LAN Switch within the length of 2000m.
The MA5300 provides FE/GE interface at the IP network end. In the PSTN end, it
provides PSTN interface.
I. FE interface
II. GE interface
Through the PSTN interface, the MA5300 can be connected with POTS interface on a
PSTN exchange. It allows simultaneous access of broadband and narrowband
service by using frequency division multiplexing (FDM).

The local maintenance serial port employs RJ-45 connector. By default, the baudrate
is 9600bit/s. This port can be used for command line operation, or for system
commissioning, or fault location. A specialized cable is needed to connect the serial
port with a local maintenance terminal, with DB9 connector at the terminal end and an
RJ45 connector on the other end.
The MA5300 frame is powered by -48VDC. Frames derive power in a distributed way,
thus eliminating inter-board power interference.

The MA5300 is connected with end users through ADSL or VDSL interfaces.
Alternatively, it is connected with LAN switch through the FE/GE interface, and then
the end users. At the network side, it connects with the IP metropolitan network
(MAN) through the FE/GE interface. Figure 1.1 illustrates a typical networking of the
MA5300.
