Supervision of tripping relay operating coil.
Description
Type V95RS relay comprises hinged armature, electromechanical elements working on the attracted
armature principle. Each operating element consists of armature, yoke, core and a hinge piece forming
the electromagnetic path. The operating coil is wound, with super enamelled copper wires having high
thermal rating, over a bobbin through which the core is passed. When the coil is energized, the core is
magnetized and attracts the hinged armature which in turn actuates the closing and opening of the
contacts.
The relay is available in two versions viz. Type V95RS2 having two elements and Type V95RS3 having
three elements. Type V95RS2 is suitable for post closing supervision of CB trip circuit and for
supervision of trip relay operating coil. Type V95RS3 is suitable for both pre and post closing supervision
of CB trip circuit.
The essential requirement of a Trip Circuit Supervision relay is that it should have a maximum
pick-up current which will not be sufficient to energise either the CB trip coil or the tripping relay coil, and
at the same time will be able to supervise the healthiness of the entire trip circuit comprising DC supply,
the tripping cable, CB auxiliary contacts and the CB trip coil, or the tripping relay coil and the DC supply
to which it is connected.
The three operating elements in the Trip Circuit Supervision relay are designated as A, B and C. Type
V95RS2 relay comprises elements A and C whereas type V95RS3 relay comprises all the three elements
A, B and C. The elements A and B are designed to have a maximum pick-up current of less than
10milliamps.The element C is a standard auxiliary relay which is energised by the normally open contacts
of elements A and B, and provides the output contacts for alarm, interlock etc. It is provided with a hand
reset, reverse flag (operation indicator).
The elements A and B are connected in series with internal resistors, so that maximum voltage drop
occurs across these elements when the relay is connected in series with circuit breaker trip coil or
tripping relay coil.
The trip circuit supervision relay is mounted in a compact, plug-in type case, suitable for flush or
projection mounting on panels.
Principle of Operation:
Please refer to the Application Diagrams given in figures 1, 2 & 3
The purpose of providing element B in the relay is to ensure that under all conditions, the main tripping
cable (denoted as ‘a’ in the application diagram) is always supervised, which is very essential. Also, if the
CB trip initiating contact (’PR’ in the application diagram) is a hand reset contact, it will short out the coil
of element A on operation, which will drop-off and de-energize element C resulting in a false alarm.
However, as soon as the CB is tripped and element A is shorted by the initiating contact PR, the element B
will pickup and keep element C energized , thus preventing the false alarm.
The element C is time delayed on drop-off by 400 milliseconds so that it does not mal-operate during
the time CB is tripped and the NO & NC auxiliary contacts of the CB change over.
Referring to fig.3, the element A is in series with the trip relay coil 86. As long as the coil and the DC supply
are healthy, element A will remain energized and in turn, will keep element C energized. If there is any fault,
element A will drop-off and de-energize element C which will give the alarm.
When the trip relay operates , its coil cut off contact 86-1 will open out and de-energize element A.
However, 1 NO contact of the trip relay is connected in parallel with the contact of element A so that
the element C will be kept energized even when the trip relay operates, and false alarm will be prevented.
