TRSM Connects

- 2009 -
Welcome

The primary objective for this initial workshop is to develop and enrich the
relationship between TRSM departments, student associations and Ryerson-wide
resources. It will provide your group with much needed information to manage your
events, integrate our brand and work cooperatively with the many players involved.

In order to bridge the gaps, an informational and resourceful program will be run by
TRSM for TRSM student groups to build reputation, education and application with
respect to co-curricular activities. Interrelated TRSM departments will contribute
their resources to achieve the following objectives:

• To empower each student group and ensure meaningful participation of

students regarding on-campus events

• Organize and effectively communicate the interconnected calendar of events ie.

Info/workshop session, case competitions, industry events

• Coordinate the efforts put forth by all active units in creating successful
processes at TRSM, while utilizing university-wide resources

• Develop event management and communication procedures to ensure

consistency and professionalism

• To advise TRSM students on event planning, develop their own skills, and
allow interested students the opportunity to engage outside organizations

Student Services

• Services Offered

Student Services in TRSM can offer support to Student Groups through group
workshops, promotion of your events and connections to other Student Services units
across campus.

o Group workshops - In the past we have facilitated sessions on Time and Project
Management for Groups, Test Preparation and Exam Writing Techniques,
Communication and Conflict Management. These topics were requested by the
groups and other topics for group and team development are possible upon
request. If there are programs offered through the Student Services units across
campus, we can help connect your group to the appropriate staff person to arrange
a session at a mutually agreed upon time.

o Promotion of your events - We are interested in assisting students to know about

the groups on campus and learn how they can get involved or even attend one
event if they are interested.

Staff from Student Services in TRSM work with the faculty and staff in all four
schools to deliver in-class programming and we meet students regularly in groups
or on a one-to-one basis. If we know about what your group is doing we can help to
promote your activities and refer students who may be interested in getting
involved. Let us know how we can assist you.

In addition, each month we create a calendar for distribution around the TRSM
building. If your group wants us to include your events on the calendar be sure to
get the details to us by the 20th of the month to ensure we can add it for the
following month.

o Student Project Fund (P-FACS) – The committee allocates funds for various
student projects that will improve student life and help develop a sense of
community at Ryerson. JOR -03, 416-979-5187,

Student Services

• Connections to other Student Services across Campus

There are many services available across campus that students in your groups may
benefit by accessing over their years at Ryerson. Any student can get information
and referral support by stopping into the Student Resource Centre (TRS 2-168).
Knowing where to get information - when they need it - will help students in your
groups.
416 979-5000., ext. 2435 students.trsm@ryerson.ca

As mentioned above, we can connect your group to services on campus to determine

how these units can assist in developing your team and also explore potential
partnering for future events.

• Procedure & Protocol

o To book a staff member from Student Services it is imperative to give as

much notice as possible. It would be best to have a few possible dates and
times sent along with the initial request with as much information about the
group (including the number of students attending) and the reason for
requesting the session.

o Please note: Any requests made may not be possible to grant due to other
commitments. We need at least a notice of one month but depending on the
time of year, we will need as much flexibility as possible. As they say, book
early to avoid disappointment!

Equipment Loans to Student Groups from TRSM Help Desk

Equipment loans are booked on a first come, first served basis. Only “official” Ryerson-
sanctioned student groups affiliated with the TRSM are eligible for equipment loans from the
TRSM Help Desk. Equipment must be returned the same day it is borrowed (i.e. no
overnight loans). Penalties for late return may include suspension of loan privileges for the
remainder of the term. Equipment is limited, so to ensure equal availability to all groups, no
group can have more than two loans booked at a time.

Procedure for Same-Day Equipment Loans to Student Groups

1. Before borrowing equipment from the TRSM Help Desk, each group must register the
names of up to three group members with Help Desk Coordinator Dominic Chan
(d27chan@ryerson.ca). Registered individuals will be the only ones allowed to request
equipment and will be responsible for having it returned on-time and in good condition.

2. Registered individuals may book equipment by phoning, e-mailing or visiting the TRSM
Help Desk (TRS 3-059, ext. 7455, or bizhelp@ryerson.ca) at least two days before the
equipment is required. The following information must be supplied: First name, last
name, phone number, group represented, name of faculty advisor, equipment needed,
the purpose for which the equipment will be used and the location and time(s) that it is
required. The TRSM Help Desk will confirm the loan based on equipment availability
and the restrictions outlined in the Student Group Support Policy.

3. When picking up the equipment, the requestor must deposit photo ID (e.g. student card
or driver’s license) at the TRSM Help Desk. Photo ID will be returned upon return of the
equipment. Only registered individuals are allowed to pick up equipment; if this is not
possible, a registered individual must visit the Help Desk in advance and make
alternate arrangements.

4. At the end of the allotted time, the equipment must be delivered back to the TRSM
Help Desk promptly and in good condition. All accessories, cables, etc. that were
provided with the equipment must be returned or the group will be charged for the
replacement cost.

Sustainable Tourism Society

N a t a l ie T h i es e n
Co-founder
The Sustainable Tourism Society (STS), a relatively new
s t s @ r ye r s o n. c a student group on campus, is committed to exposing the growing need for
thoughtful and responsible tourism development.

The travel and tourism industry is one of the largest industries in the world,
with the potential of benefiting businesses, local communities, travelers and
other such stakeholders through new developments, job creation and
increased cultural awareness. However, there are negative aspects of the
industry such as environmental degradation and social implications that
need to be acknowledged so that methods can be implemented to avoid
such consequences.

The STS strongly believes in a positive approach to fostering awareness on

these issues by promoting industry wide best practices that exemplify
responsible initiatives being implemented within the industry. In 2008, STS
hosted World Tourism Day, an event attended by over 150 industry
members, faculty and students to discuss how the tourism industry is
responding to the effects of climate change.

Through discussion, enlightening lectures, events and field trips, the

Sustainable Tourism Society aims to engage students of the Ted Rogers of
Management. Join us for an exciting year on campus! Want to get involved?

Our main objective is to create and foster a forum in which women in the field of IT
can share a vision, wisdom, experience, and values. More specifically, through a
variety of Industry related events such as guest speaker nights, workshops, socials,
fund raisers, and conferences, WITM sets out with the focus of “getting the gears in
motion” (see figure 1). In particular, these three gears consist of:

1. Pre-university female students

2. Current female IT university students
3. Industry professionals and alumni

Each gear will rely on WITM’s resources to operate interdependently. In accordance

with WITM’s mission, the ultimate goal is to have each gear depending on each
other and operating in unison through WITM. Thus, outcome from any one gear will
subsequently help to turn the other gears. Above all, through the gears in motion
concept WITM aims to:

• Present unique opportunities within the ITM program to network, socialize,

and get connected
• Educate and update women on industry specific topics
Women in ITM
• Communicate potential employment opportunities
