Parent and Family Engagement Policy


2019– 2020
This policy has been jointly developed and agreed upon by the Bruner Elementary Schools and parents of
students served in the school pursuant to Title I. Bruner Elementary School will convene annual meetings, at
convenient and varied times for parents, to evaluate this policy. The meetings will be held on 8/29/19 during
the SOT meeting. The next one will be on 9/3/19 during the school’s PTA meeting. During these scheduled
meetings, translation services offered to families, as well. Additionally, parents are welcome to bring students
and younger siblings to parent information meeting events to better accommodate the needs of our families.

The school’s Parent and Family Engagement Policy, developed by the school staff and parents, will be available
to parents in the school’s main resource area located in the main office for those parents unable to attend
scheduled meetings. The Policy is available to the community electronically via the school website and in
printed form in the main office.

Bruner Elementary School will involve parents in an organized, ongoing, and timely way in the planning, review,
and improvement and development of Title I programs, School Performance Plan, SB178 Grant, School
Operational Plan, and Parent And Family Engagement Policy at various times throughout the 2019-2020 school
year. During established parent meetings (monthly), Bruner staff and parents will evaluate and monitor school
plans and documents with a focus on continued growth and improvement. The responses from the annual
District Wide Survey will be reviewed with a focus on seeking feedback and suggestions for improved school
practices. Likewise, Bruner shall routinely provide methods in which parents can provide feedback to the school
in both print and electronic format. The feedback received will be used to develop focus topics for school
meetings, events, or practices.

Analysis of the District Parent Survey revealed that 80.1% of parents participated in the spring 2019 survey. The
result was shared with parents during PTA meetings, monthly meeting and in school newsletters. Overall, the
survey results show that 88.6% of parents responded favorably toward the school in the District Pledge of
Achievement Goals -Goal 4: Engagement; and 88.6% under Goal 5: Happy with School. While this information is
positive, the fact that the result are only representative of 81.9% of the school community, our efforts during
the 2019-2020 school year will focus largely on increasing the number of parent participants in an effort to
assess parent perceptions. Information was shared with parents during meetings, school events, newsletters,
school websites, and/or parent conferences. Strategies to increase parent and student participation will include
parent and student incentives for participating, increased awareness (newsletters, ParentLink, ClassDojo, school
website, Parent Communication Board/Marquee, Facebook, Twitter) and increased access to computers for
parents.

The Educational Involvement Accord and Code of Conduct forms are included into the registration process
through Infinite Campus. Parents must review Accords prior to completing their child’s registration.
Administrators and teachers will have the Accords during parent/student conferences or other occasions to
emphasize the importance of family/school commitment to student success.

Administration and staff will provide assistance to parents, as appropriate, in understanding such topics as: the
State’s academic content) and achievement standards(Nevada Academic Content Standards, state and local
assessments (SBAC, AIMSweb Plus, MAP, etc), the requirements of Title I, how to monitor their student’s
academic progress, and how to work with school staff to improve the achievement of the student. The school
will host community and parent events to inform parents about upcoming changes affecting CCSD and Bruner
Elementary School. The aforementioned will be communicated with parents during parent meetings, Open
House events, Family Academic Nights, Parent/Student/Teacher Academic Planning Time, parent conferences,
newsletters/flyers, and information provided on the school website.

Teachers will provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment
enabling students to meet the academic standards. Teachers will communicate information with parents of
which will assist parents in developing an understanding of the Nevada Academic Content Standards, Infinite
Campus, state testing requirements and targets, as well as instructional techniques used in their child’s
classroom. Teachers will use a variety of methods to provide this information to parents including conferences,
websites, newsletters/informational flyers, and Family Academic Nights, and electronic applications (e.g.
ClassDojo, Remind, Google Classroom, etc.) throughout the school year. Parent survey responses collected
during both Spring and Fall 2019, have indicated parents are largely receptive to electronic communication
techniques as a preferred method of school/family communication.

Administration and staff will offer parent involvement activities throughout the school year that will include
opportunities for parents to volunteer and be involved in their child(ren)’s school experience . Parents will be
invited to staff development and parent education planning meetings throughout the year. Additionally, Bruner
E.S. has partnered with Public Education Foundation to establish the Family Engagement Program. Topics to be
discuss during these meetings will include ways to provide home support for their children’s education, school-
based decision-making, project-based activity, and increasing the effectiveness of communication between the
school and parents.

Bruner Elementary School will provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve
the student’s achievement, such as literacy training and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parental
involvement. Administration and staff will provide consistent access to educational resources for parents to use
together with their children. Such training will involve a literacy-based family nights to occur in the month of
January, 2020, a science/math-based family night in February, 2020; and additional literacy focus in the month
of March 2020. Additionally, access to technology in the office, as well as personnel assistance are some of the
services that we provide when needed. Parents are able to access Infinite Campus for registration and review
his/her child’s information during school hours.

With regard to professional development, the administration will, with the assistance of parents, educate
teachers, pupil service personnel, principals and other staff in:
a. The value and utility of contributions of parents
b. How to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners
c. Implementing and coordinating parent programs
d. Building ties between parents and the school

Professional development in these areas will occur during site based collaboration time as well as during routine
staff meetings throughout the school year. District based personnel (FACES, etc.), the school's PTA Organization,
and 21st Century Grant’s community partners are also invited to provide additional professional development
and increase awareness of parent/family topics.

Bruner Elementary School will ensure that all information related to school and parent programs, meetings and
other activities is sent to parent in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can
understand. Communication items (flyers/newsletters) are translated and made available to parents, as needed.
Currently, six staff members are available to provide translation assistance while conferencing with parents.
Additionally, Bruner utilizes ClassDojo, Parentlink, and school website to send schoolwide communication and
specific student messages. This application allows parents to select a preferred language for message
translation.

The administration will, to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parent involvement
programs and activities with student programs, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers,
SafeKey and PTA activities, which encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of
their children. SafeKey is available via the City of North Las Vegas, at Lucile Bruner Elementary School daily from
6:00 am – 7:40 pm and 2:11 – 6:00 pm. In addition, the Bruner PTA offers monthly meetings. PTA meetings are
scheduled on the third Thursday of each month and the times of the meetings rotate bi-monthly directly after
school (2:21 pm) and in the evenings (6:00 pm) to better accommodate parents’ needs. Parent activities offered
in conjunction with the Bruner PTA include, but are not limited to: Fall Harvest Festival, Family BINGO Night,
Family Movie Night, Sweetheart Dance, Nevada Reading Week parent activities, and Family Dinner Night.

Lucile Bruner Elementary School will provide reasonable support for parental involvement activities as parents
may request. (i.e. parent comment or suggestion sheets and conducting meetings at the parent’s convenience).
Additionally, a school social workers and one (1) half-time school counselor work at Bruner ES to support the
Wrap-Around Team. These individuals work with parents to connect them with community services and
resources as needed. Parents may personally request to meet with school social worker, teachers/staff may
recommend parents to work with the social workers. The social worker and counselor will also actively work
with students to help identify families who may benefit from the assistance of such individuals and resources.
