NATIVE AMERICAN RESEARCH
RESOURCES
My advice is to identify and speak with tribal elders and tribal historians about their history, including tribal
genealogies, of the Native American tribe your ancestor belong to. This may not always end successfully. Some tribal
elders and historians are more willing to assist with providing information than others.
One suggestion is do as much research as you can, on your own, in order to have specific questions about specific
ancestors. I also advise to be specific about what research goal you are trying to achieve. Are you solely seeking
ancestral information? Are you seeking historical as well as genealogical tribal information? Are you planning on
applying for tribal membership? Your research goals may very well influence the outcome of your initial contact with
tribal elders and historians.
