The document argues that while the death penalty appears to eliminate criminals, it does not actually deter crime. Studies have shown the death penalty does not deter people from committing crimes, but may only deter the likelihood of being caught or punished. Additionally, there is a possibility of an innocent person being punished if the judicial system makes mistakes. Life imprisonment is a better alternative than the death penalty as it allows for the possibility of reform and eventual release if the offender is deemed rehabilitated.

I totally agree with the statement because death penalty seems to
eliminate crime as it directly eliminates the criminals but it is not so. It has been found from a study that it doesn’t deter people from committing crimes. It can at most deter the likelihood of being caught or punished. Moreover, if the judicial system is flawed then there is possibility that an innocent person can be punished as witnesses and prosecutors, all can make mistake. If a life is gone, it’s gone; it cannot be brought back. It can also be said that death penalty can be an easy retribution for the criminal as it liberates them from subsequent punishment in one go. Converting the death penalty to life imprisonment is much better way to let realise the offender his mistake. And, also if any point of time it seems that he has have enough of his punishment and is now a reformed human being, then he can be released too. So, I believe that death penalty is never the answer, there is always an alternative to it. It is rightly said by the author of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien “Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement; For even the very wise cannot see all ends.” -- Rahul Gauriyar (160543)
