Sleep Deprivation

Background What is Sleep Deprivation?

In this presentation, I will be talking about It is lack of sleep or reduced quality of sleep.
Sleep Deprivation and how it affects your
body. Sleep Deprivation can cause a lot of
issues to your health. “It drains your mental

abilities and puts your physical health at real
risk.”
I picked this topic for a lot of reasons.
Considerably most people have experienced
this and have not seen the risks it comes
(Watson, S., & Cherney, K. (2019, April 19). with experiencing this for to long.
Why it’s important to care
Why should you care?

Every living person should at least get about 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.
The long term effects of lacking sleep are real. You can have all kinds of
health problems. Your body needs to rest, just as it needs to eat and
breathe. When sleeping, your body heals itself and restores its chemical
balance. Not having enough sleep, your brain and body will not function
normally as it always does. Not sleeping enough can increases the risk of
early death.

It causes…?

Memory loss, trouble thinking/concentrating, mood changes, accidents,

weakened immunity, high blood pressure, the risk for diabetes, weight
gain, low sex drive, the risk of heart disease, and poor balance.
How many hours of sleep we
need Z

● Infants need about 16 to 18 Z
Z
● One-year-olds need roughly 11 to 14 hours a

night

● School age children need about 9 and 11

● Teenagers should get 8 and 10

● Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Why is it a problem?
Not being aware of sleep deprivation and acknowledging it can cause
a lot of emotional and unhealthy problems for you or to anyone else.
Psychological risks include impulsive behavior, anxiety, depression,
paranoia, suicidal thoughts. If sleep deprivation continues long
enough you can start hearing/seeing things that are not real or there.
You can also experience microsleep in a day. You’ll fall asleep for a
fews seconds or minutes without realizing it.

When drinking caffeine or any other energy drink to stay awake it will
not be enough to override your body's need for rest. You are making it
worse by making it harder for you to sleep in the night.
What is being done about this?
Current status, is just GETTING more sleep, especially if you've lost several weeks or
longer than that. After that point go see someone like a doctor for help because you may
have a sleeping disorder. If you are diagnosed with a sleeping disorder you may be given
medication. They're many ways of preventing sleep deprivation like: Making sure you get
all your hours of sleep needed, limit daytime naps, going to bed at the same time every
night, waking up at the same time every morning, sticking to your sleeping schedule,
relaxing activities, try not to use electronic devices right before bed, and physical
activities regularly.

In my opinion, it can work if you decide it to. Many people are still affected by sleep
deprivation but it's just a matter of time if you help yourself or not.

The only thing it should improve on you should try to avoid naps because it can cause an
issue when trying to sleep at night.
