INDIVIDUALS
Fray Damian Massanet – traveled to East Texas to oversee the
establishment of Spanish Missions in the late 1600s

Antonio Margil de Jesus – established Spanish missions:


Mission San Jose in San Antonio

Francisco Hidalgo – established East Texas Missions and


trading post near Nacogdoches then later Mission San Antonio de
Valero (later called the Alamo)

Philip Nolan – came to Texas to steal wild mustangs from the


Spanish region; was under suspicion when selling the horses to
American Army in Louisiana; was killed when ignoring Spanish
order to stay out of Texas.

Jose Gutierrez de Lara – Spanish born revolutionary and


follower of Father Hidalgo; joined with Magee to form the
Republican Army of the North to fight for Mexican Independence;
leader of the Gutierrez Magee expedition.

Augustus W. Magee – Former U.S. Soldier who helped Gutierrez


spread propaganda into New Spain and led his army into East
Texas, where he died at La Bahia.

Dr. James Long – originally from the U.S, came to Texas to


declare its independence from Spain; captured in La Bahia in
1819 and later executed in Mexico City for his crimes.
Jean Lafitte – French pirate who sided with Mexican
revolutionaries; fought Spanish ships from his headquarters in
Galveston.

Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla – motivated by the ideas of the


Enlightenment, he wanted Mexico to be independent from Spain;
killed for his outspoken revolutionary ideals, leading to the
Mexican Revolution

Marques de Rubi’s report to inspect borders of Northern


Mexico; showed Spain’s loss of control and caused conflict with
settlers in Texas.

INDIVIDUALS (during the Mexican settlement of Texas)


Erasmo Seguin - a representative from Texas, helped write the
Mexican Federal Constitution of 1824, which encouraged U.S.
immigration to Texas.

EMPRESARIOS:
Moses Austin – received approval from Spain to bring American
settlers to Texas; died and passed task on to son

Stephen F. Austin (SFA) – after Mexican Independence from


Spain, gained approval from Mexican government to bring
American settlers to Texas, first empresario
 Old 300 – first organized group of U.S. settlers, which
included 300 families brought by Stephen F. Austin and
settled in Austin’s Colony
Martin de Leon - only empresario to found a primarily Mexican
colony.

Green DeWitt - received a grant to settle 400 families in Texas,


located in the Gulf Coastal Plains
